the Jeagers cant go through the portal, only Kaiju can. thats why in the end of the movie they grabbed onto the kaiju corpse then went through the portal.
as to why they didnt just sit on the ONE portal and have all the jeagers there, i have no idea. maybe because the depth?

[/quote] The depth doesn't seem to be an issue as long as the pilots still survive. And they could accurately predict the time of the next Kaiju attack, so long as the pilots had food in their control room, and they were stationed immediately before the next attack, they could ride one into the portal in a matter of minutes.
