I'm curious if Bungie has developed an entirely new engine for Destiny. I could imagine it's some gorgeous frankenstien of the previous engine too.
I still have yet to see any VFX examples from the trailers and can't wait to see how they look. (Aside from the one clip of an alien 'channeling' energy)
Destiny is powered by a new, internally developed set of engines, the product of six years worth of development, according to engineering lead Chris Butcher.
I'm pretty sure they used the Reach engine as a base and then gutted and re-tooled it from there.

Whatever it is I would love to see more of their VFX in the viDoc's/Trailers. Their gun-porn looks amazing as expected but im really hoping they have some really awesome new FX to tease soon. I'd love to get my hands on that particle editor!

Since its next gen console, will they game be "upgraded" than most engines that are being used today?

I always thought Bungie used an in house engine called Blam! So with that assumption it's probably the same engine they used on Reach which in turn is from the previous Halo games.

In the vidoc they said they had to redo most of the artist tools. Now they can create and view in realtime, almost like more detailed version of forge.

You really don't develop completely new engines very often unless you are in the buisness of making engines for other people. It's always going to be a gorgeous frankenstein of the previous one, with certain systems gutted and completely redone and such.
