Westboro leader quits and apologizes for church's activities

What do you think about this? Can you simply just quit and say "sorry"? Does that absolve you of everything you've done?

7 回复She is apologizing for her actions and is deeply sorry for the pain she has inflicted. I am always open to apologies, I'm an extremely forgiving person, so this is good news to me. Personally, I really don't care what she's done in the past. If she is deeply regretful, her worst fear at this point is rejection. Imagen that you've done so many horrible things in the past, but you realize the error of your ways, and nobody acknowledges it. It's an absolutely horrible feeling.

6 回复So Megan Phelps-Roper quit? This isn't surprising. In the Louis Theroux documentary I thought it was pretty obvious that she wasn't entirely convinced by what she was doing. Quitting doesn't absolve her of all the horrid things she's done and advocated, but at least she has a chance to make up for it. She's not a leader of the WBC though...... she's high up but that crazy old guy is the leader. Fun fact; the crazy leader, Fred Phelps, was a prominent lawyer in the 80s who fought for race equality and for black people being subjected to racial discrimination. He won several awards for his work.

But excuses don't absolve you from your past actions, only your present and future actions do. That doesn't mean that a genuine apology is worthless; you have to change the way you think before you change the way you act. So it's great that she and her sister were able to break away from the influence of such a horrible organization. It takes strength to do what's right, even when that means being cut off from your family.

God hating gays and america and such. A change like that doesn't come easily. Walking away from a cult is very hard. She is probably dead to them now. I'm very surprised that she suddenly decided to change her ways and leave the church. I really hope this isn't some elaborate hoax or some stupid shit like that. I hope she manages to find a new place in the world doing something else besides spreading hate and intolerance. I don't forgive her. Nor am I telling the families of all the funerals she had picketed to.

Yes, sorry does absolve them(her and her sister for those that didn't read carefully). They seem to have changed their ways, and they've apologized (seemingly) sincerely, for any pain they've caused. Do you forgive your friend when you have an argument and one or both sides sincerely apologizes? Of course(or at least I hope you do, lol). It's not like they've killed anyone or anything, so I can't see why a simple "we're sorry, we see now that we were wrong" wouldn't be enough. Plus you gotta remember they were brought up in a cult more or less, which basically means they've been taught that what they've been doing is right all their lives, it's difficult to break away from that sorta thing. Good on em for breaking away, hopefully people won't give em too much hell, and other members will follow their example and leave WBC aswell.

It's things like this that we need to uphold. Realizing the error of one's ways is a great and wonderful thing, especially when the error is as blatant and one-sided as the WBC. She and her sister should be welcomed with open arms by those she opposed originally, to show that her decision is to be encouraged and not criticized for being too little, too late. It's up to us to take the moral high ground on this one, and if we don't we only encourage the remaining WBC to be obstinate and hateful.
