If you have finders mods on you get the increase when you use kinetic weapon rather than a special or heavy weapon, so if you need ammo use primary and will have higher drop rate on kills.

Also, they don’t increase your chances, they guarantee a finder brick after a certain number of kills. Like a hidden special meter. Depending on the weapon type and in the case of primaries if an exotic, it adds more to the meter.

Also to add, the weapon in hand at the time of kill is the one attributing to the kill counter for the special meter. This is also in effect for ability kills, and delayed special/power weapon kills. So, if you are going to go on an ability kill spree, or use AOD GL's swap to the primary weapon while the kills occur.
