At that point I could only enjoy the beautiful views, setpieces and practical effect Thing dolls. But the story was lost.
If you watched it for plot, then you watched it for the wrong reasons.
The ending just confirmed my point of view, the movie was pointless.
How is a cliff hanger pointless? Sure Childs (the Arbiter) and MacReedy are human (?) Popsicles, but there was still the possibility that one was infected, and a sequel could have happened. Which I'm glad it didn't and allowed this movie to stand alone in all it's sci-fi / horror glory. Best sci-fi / horror movie of that generation, period.

 •
Best sci-fi / horror movie of that generation, period.
Humorous bits notwithstanding, I think that JC's Prince of Darkness is better than The Thing. That's probably because it's a higher concept. Of course, They Live! was pretty prescient and really applicable to the times in which we live. Regardless, all three are masterworks, underappreciated and end in uncertainty as to the outcome of the future.

 • >if you watched it for the plot, you watched it for the wrong reasons >how is a cliffhanger pointless? Thse two cancel eachother m'dude. If the plot isn't important, why leave it hanging? You're just over glorifying the plot that you've made void. The ending is very nihilistic due to the time it was made, but when you look at it with a nihilistic lens, it just doesn't work. It's quite literally pointless to ponder, even though the whole movie was riddled with grade A hints on how to solve it. Basically it's a puzzle that wants to be solved, but doesn't have any reason to be solved.

 •
If the plot isn't important, why leave it hanging?
It's called suspense. "Always leave them guessing".
The ending is very nihilistic due to the time it was made, but when you look at it with a nihilistic lens, it just doesn't work
Who the hell cares? You're making way more out of that than enjoying the movie for what it was. Star Wars is FILLED with all manner of things that don't work in our reality. None of which make it any less loved.
Basically it's a puzzle that wants to be solved, but doesn't have any reason to be solved.
Again, you miss the entire point. Ever watch an Alfred Hitchcock film? Sometimes the ending is what makes the movie endure for it does not answer all the questions. Same with Half Life 2. Most who played it have waited tirelessly for a 3rd edition, solely because the story and ending compels us to.

 • They actually followed up the story with video games, I can’t remember exactly what happens but I’m pretty sure neither were a thing.

 • Agreed on all points, although I did also like The Thing's narrative.
