I always thought, it was a humanoid holding its arms , up and out towards the sky . Maybe as , welcoming the traveler or praising him as some sort of God .

That would be pretty rad but I think its a wolf's face the three points representing a fireteam with the middle being the pack leader 'ghost, traveler, or speaker'. But like I said it would be cool if it was a humanoid figure in a prayer to the traveler or whatnot.
