People who aren't Japanese and try to be Japanese by doing things such as replacing English words with Japanese ones in every day conversation are weeaboos. Otaku are just people who really enjoy anime, possibly to the point of obsession, but don't try to be Japanese.

Weeaboo is just a -blam!-ing insult, in the same way that you might call a foolish person 'retarded' or a cruel person 'heartless'. You're much more interested in Japanese media culture than most non-Japanese people, so you're a weeaboo if I disagree with you and an otaku if I do. I'm willing to settle on the latter; I just don't get many chances to use the word, 'weeaboo'.

My knowledge of the Japanese and their language is not based on anime or manga like a weeaboo. I have taken multiple college level courses on the language and have learned directly from Japanese people. I don't act like I'm Japanese however. Otaku technically is an insult as well in Japan, but overseas (from Japan) it doesn't have the same negative implications. Many western anime fans will self-identify as otaku.
