If someone ever breaks into my house, they better hope I'm not there. My loaded, semi-auto 12 gauge will have some choice words for them. Let's just say they aren't going to live to take me to court for their injuries...

Depends entirely on circumstances and intent. Where I live, if someone is trespassing with intent to harm, or if the threat is tipped out of favor of the defense (say there were more than one person breaking in, and you were alone) it is within legal right for self defense to pull that trigger. Just be damn sure before you do.
