The thing is, you'll need the exotic shards to ascend your current exotics with the next DLC. so you may have 45 shards but you'll need them to upgrade your 62 exotics if you have them all. This will reoccur as more DLC's get released, so you'll always need them. I would rather that then have another worthless currency.
