There's a difference between the two and it's why the whole thing started.
Xurners wanted to keep their sense of pride for getting the weapon when they had none since they bought it while the true earners had their sense of pride and rubbed it in the Xurners faces.
The REAL reason why the whole thing started is because this video game genre's definition of "accomplishment" is by being the minority of people who own the rarest items in the game.
Xur adds an extra way to acquire said rare item, so now the people who got the item through Method A feel cheapened by the masses of people who own the item through Method B, and feel the need to make Method A feel more valuable than Method B to make themselves feel better for acquiring said item through Method A.
So in essence, you guys are the real reason why this whole thing started.
There's no denying Method A has the better feel. We just want players to experience that moment. I never got that feeling with Third Man or Hard Light.
The problem is that strange coins are too easy to come by, now that people have accumulated three characters who can all get 27 strange coins in a single week.
If strange coins were tied to each character, as if they were like vanguard marks, then you would have to save up each character's amount for couple weeks before you could buy anything.
Back when I bought the Gjallahorn from Xur, I only had one character and not many ways to earn strange coins, so I had to grind furiously at short notice from Friday morning to Saturday night in order to get enough coins in time. That was one of the most stressful ways I've ever gotten an Exotic, but it also has become one of the most satisfying weapons I own.
