The War On Terror is an excuse for the US to spread its influence and democracy in the Middle East. How is it justified to invade two countries and for over 10 years when the people that planned and executed the attacks on 9/11 were a small group that really had nothing to do with either Iraq or Afghanistan past some small aide they may have received?

 •
people that planned and executed the attacks on 9/11 were a small group that really had nothing to do with either Iraq or Afghanistan
They had a lot to do with Afghanistan, bro. The people who carried about the 9/11 attacks belonged to an al-Qaeda cell based out of Hamburg, Germany. They received instructions from AQ operatives such as Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and Mohammed Atef. They both got the go ahead from AQ central command, who at that time, was based out of Afghanistan via safe-haven provided by the Taliban.

 • Just because they are based in Afghanistan or whatever doesn't mean we have the right to carry out a full scale invasion on their country and wreck it and kill civilians. Afghanistan is a hopeless country. It's worse off than it was before we got there. The Taliban can't be stopped. Accept that we are losing this war.

 •
Just because they are based in Afghanistan or whatever doesn't mean we have the right to carry out a full scale invasion on their country and wreck it and kill civilians.
Being that the Taliban were the leaders of Afghanistan, and unwilling to hand over UBL, I'd say we did have the right.
Afghanistan is a hopeless country. It's worse off than it was before we got there. The Taliban can't be stopped. Accept that we are losing this war.
It's not hopeless, just things need to change (i.e corruption). Afghanistan has been one of the poorest countries in the world since 1979, however, their economy is improving. If you read my posts below, you can see one way to combat terrorism on a large scale. I'm not admitting we're losing...because we aren't.

 • There's a reason why that country is known as the graveyard of empires. And how could the Taliban hand UBL over when he was in his mansion in Pakistan? I speculate UBL may have even been a prisoner of the Pakistanis based on the poor conditions he was living in and the fact the place was right next to Pakistan's West Point. But that's a whole separate issue.

 • During the Taliban rule, UBL was in Afghanistan. After the battle of Tora Bora, he fled to Pakistan.
