There's a psychological phenomenon known as "Decision fatigue;" in the shortest possible terms, decision making requires mental energy, the more decisions you're asked to make the more energy is required, and like all forms of thinking, eventually you exhaust the mental resources needed to keep making decisions.
From the moment we wake up, we are seemingly bombarded with choices—what to wear, what to eat, which emails to answer first. By the time we’ve navigated our morning routine, our mental energy has already taken a hit. And as the day wears on, the sheer weight of decision-making can start to take its toll, often without us even realizing it. Making decisions day in and day out can be exhausting and cause people to feel overwhelmed, anxious or stressed.
This is known as decision fatigue, which is a state of mental overload that can impede a person’s ability to continue making decisions.
Here's how that relates to Destiny 2: We're being asked to make more decisions now than ever before; we're being asked to make decisions about our artifact, decisions about our builds, decisions about what content to play, decisions about what modifiers to use, decisions about what gear to keep, favorite, and dismantle, decisions about how to upgrade our gear, all of these decisions are ancillary but necessary to the actual gameplay.
What I'm getting at in no uncertain terms is that the current game can be, in a very literal sense, mentally exhausting. We aren't just being asked to play the game, we're being asked to make dozens of choices every time we play, choices that add up; I think we see this fatigue reflected in the community, in their frustrations with featured gear, with modifiers, with vault space constraints, it might be part of the reason so many people are focusing on optimal builds and optimal runs, it just requires that much less thought.
Does anyone not feel a little exhausted when it comes time to clean out your vault?
Bungie meant well when they tried to give us more choices, and I don't want to diminish that, but those choices take a toll on players. One of the nice things about Pathfinder and Bounties were that the choices were baked in "Okay, if I want Loot X, I need to equip Weapon Y," that's a lot simpler and easier than picking half a dozen modifiers every time you want to run an Op or checking if your gear is on the featured list.
Decision fatigue doesn't explain all the current frustrations with the game, but I do think it's a huge contributing factor. Modifiers at best feel like busy work, and at worst they're an active frustration, that frustration adds up. The frustration from cleaning your vault every two days adds up. The frustration of choosing what gear to upgrade adds up. Add enough friction, and eventually movement stops altogether.
Destiny 2 induces a lot of decision fatigue, even more now that we're all living in the portal, reducing that fatigue might get more players to stay in the game.

I spend more time trying to clear out vault space than playing the game recently. Armor is in such an awkward spot at the moment. Feels like you have to pick and choose whether or not you even want pieces of a set on certain characters.

1 回覆I agree. I don't mind choices in the game, but for instance, in D2, it could very well be enough with making choices for the abilities, weapons and armour in my opinion. Plug'n play. There are so many sandbox changes, every season focuses on specific metas and so on. For a casual player like me that don't have time to read up everyday on the forums and watch dozens of streamers before sitting down and play after a month of hiatus it is just too much, but I tend to not care about it. I frankly have no idea of what the current good build is or how I should play some activities to be efficient and play as Bungie wants. I have enough of decisions and priorities I need to focus all day long at work. When I want to play a game, it is for relaxing. Destiny 2 is far too demanding on the player needing to set things up in order for you being able to play an activitiy efficient. It is starting to feel like a hard core flight sim where you sit on the tarmac for 20 minutes pushing buttons, programming the autopilot etc...

OP: a good and thought provoking post! 🤔 Being an old tortoise, if things begin to overwhelm, I make a simple decision - tea break…or, switch off! Previously, I posted a thread about having 9x different armour sets on my chest slot alone?! 🧐 After pondering awhile, I decided to delete anything that I didn’t like or want; I kept my TechSec gear - because the perks suit my favourite toys; I also kept my Trials / IB gear, too. My vault continues to hover in the 690s - no matter how many times I springs clean it…the flood of new gear / weapons is nonstop…so, occasionally, I just burn stuff to make some space - even if I’d rather not have to do that. 🤨 At the end of the day, I have the ultimate power to switch the ps5 ‘off’ - whenever I want! Easy peasy, really! 😂 That is all. Ease Springs! 🖖

1 回覆While i do have a bit of option fatigue, the biggest thing for me in terms of mental fatigue is that every damn activity is like friggin Hell in a Cell in a dark room and everyone is just swinging steel chairs. I dont mind a challenge, but i start getting tensions headaches when every aspects of the game that offers the tiniest increment of progression is just explosions, screen shake and flashing lights.

1 回覆Great post. No joke, I 'usually' play on & off thru the day around jobs, I'm retired, by jobs I mean washing up, taking dogs out etc, & I sleep like a baby & I feel more tired than when I had a full time job & worked overtime on top, now I know why. That being said, I've not been playing as much because of how bad it is & I've not been sleeping too great

5 回覆I definitely suffer from this condition regularly playing this game. I can't count the number of times I've logged on with the intention of running an activity and as I go about setting up my armor, weapons, mods, the artifact, and so forth I've completely lost interest and logged back off again. Don't get me started on my stupid vault.......... Fortunately, I've got no problem immediately hopping into another game instead and scratching my gaming itch, which is just what I do. If I'm not feeling 'Destiny' there're plenty of other things waiting for me.
