Majora's Mask is my favorite, and I believe it to be the best Zelda to date.

  • If MM had 2-3 more dungeons with the same structure as the other one's then I would agree wholeheartedly.

  • Playing OoT and MM on 3DS has reminded me that MM really isn't the best Zelda. An amazing game no doubt. The story and mask stuff is incredible. But when you compare the dungeons, items, puzzles, boss bottles MM fumbles.

  • I disagree. Almost, if not every, item in MM has a specific function. These items are used multiple times throughout the game, unlike Ocarina of Time (looking at the Megaton hammer). Masks also serve as a massive gameplay mechanic, similar to Link Between World's wall transformation. It takes the base game of Ocarina of Time, and adds upon it in better ways. Puzzles also felt more intricate to me because of the mask mechanic. You had to often switch between primary masks in dungeons to complete the dungeon, where as in OoT you could just run through it normally. That part is already in MM, but now with even more puzzles with the masks. The dungeons of MM is probably the weakest part of the game, with only 4 it has the lowest number out of any Zelda game. Boss battles suffer because of this. MM didn't have as many battles, but MM3DS made sure the boss battles are more memorable and approachable. Just look at what they did with Twinmold. Other than Twinrova, I can't think of an OoT boss battle that made me go "Wow, this is unique". Gohma was typical "hit eye, hit enemy" battle. Dodongo was throwing bombs and slashing. Jabu Jabu was just mob management and dodging. Phantom Ganon was clever, but I felt it was entirely unnecessary because of the real Ganon. Volvagia was just hitting and dodging. Morpha was grabbing and hitting. Bongo is probably my second favorite boss behind Twinrova, as the invisible body/two hand concept was fresh to me. MM3DS only has 4 memorable fights, all of them being every boss except Oldowa. Even if it fumbles in those areas, it outshines every Zelda in atmosphere, story telling, characters, side quests, and music IMO. I'm not saying the game is 100% perfect, but I love the game and I strongly believe it to be the best Zelda. I often find too many times people are blinded by the nostalgia of OoT. Yeah, MM was built of OoT. But it was also developed in under a year, and boasted better elements of questing, story telling and gameplay.

Phantom Ganon was an incredible boss. Even the fixed MM boss fights (and that we have to say fixed is telling) still don't outshine the number and quality of OoT bosses. They had to fix the boss fights for a reissuing of the game 15 years later. I think MM is an A+ game. I am by no means one of the game's haters. But it is not OoT. If we're going to compare the two then you need to factor in the sheer amount of mechanics, items, assets, and formula MM inherits from OoT. Disqualifying that, if we're really getting into which is the best Zelda, is a cop out argument. It's a replica with some brilliant subversions on OoT that give it its uniqueness. OoT is the bar with which every Zelda tries to meet. OoT is the closest we get to having a consensus on a greatest game of all time.
