re-posting as a comment to the top level post, instead of to deej's reply... So, @DeeJ, if "404Architect" is just a troll, can you refute any of the specific claims he makes? * Was there tension between "MMO Mass Effect" and "Accessible Shooter" camps inside Bungie? * Were massive revisions made to the story starting ~7 months before release? * Were huge portions of dialogue excised and several recordings redone to support the new narrative? * Did a guy get hired this year to write all the Grimoire Cards? * Did the factions have their storylines and dialogue cut? What were "Faction Wars" (as seen in https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwOUi4JDC4o 1:19)? * Were there originally 3 origin storylines, one per race? * Was the level design originally more robust and cinematic? * When Joe and others left it was a blow to the development cycle? * Why *did* Joe Staten leave? * Was there pressure from Activision to ship early and/or to simplify the storyline? * Was voice chat and trading implemented and if so, why was it cut? * In a game that is ostensibly all about collaboration, why is it so hard to form groups and communicate with other players? Most of all, does anyone at Bungie feel good about charging $60 for a game with such a nullity of a storyline, when other AAA franchises like Gears of War and Mass Effect are able to ship solid, extensive, entertaining stories *and* engaging multiplayer modes for that same $60? And assuming there were internal factions (which DeeJ did confirm elsewhere), do the people who grabbed hold of the steering wheel, cranked it hard to the left, and ended up crashing the whole car, regret their egotism? At least when BioWare changed the theme of Mass Effect and Dragon Age (turning each from an RPG into Action-RPG), they had the decency to wait for the sequel(s).

Good questions and I would like to know them, too. However, games change in development ALL THE TIME. It's part of the process and Joe Staten was pretty candid during the development process about how all over the place the ideas went. I certainly don't feel ripped off, because Bungie nailed the most important thing: THE GAMEPLAY. Destiny is the best shooter I've played since Half Life 2, although it is certainly very different, and the visuals are out of this world. Also, the lore and world are incredibly well crafted and invite you to learn more. The only problem is, you can't. I can see the Bungie didn't want to suffocate players with a linear story, as that can ruin a multiplayer player experience if the story is "rammed down the player's throat," to paraphrase Joe Staten, but I feel they might have gone too far with that philosophy. My ONLY critiques are with engagement and immersion. IF the story was gutted without actually changing the missions, of course I feel a little disappointed. The lack of cohesion or any threads tying the missions or explanation of WHAT/WHY you're doing them is frustrating. No continuity. Also, the lack of character exposition feels disconnected. The factions are barely explained (even in the Grimoire) and who/what is the Speaker? What is the Light, Ether, Darkness, etc? Is the Queen's Brother still The Crow, and if so, why does he behave like a spoiled 13 year old? These are the burning questions for me... More importantly, will everything be set right with future updates/releases. STILL, even if the story was butchered, Destiny's gameplay, visuals, and mythology are unparalleled. A Penny Arcade test user who played the original, more story-heavy version wasn't impressed, but said that "Bungie found the path" with the current version's gameplay and feel, so that's the most important part. That's the foundation that will sustain the game for the long term. That's what makes it worth MORE than $60 worth of enjoyment for me, story or not. Basically, we don't know that the original version was even that good. It could have been just another linear shooter like Halo, and Bungie was forced to do massive surgery to forge it into a more open, fun experience.
