Well.
He would have become powerful in the ways of the Sith. He planned to kill the emperer and then unify the galaxy. The dark side was a means to an end (saving Padme). He had no real intention of being that evil and only remained so as penance for thinking he killed Padme.
Read the book of the last film, it's so much better than the film, it has all Annakins inner monologue.

I'll probably pick it up if that's the case, it would be really cool to here what his mind was saying.

Honestly, I know he comes over as a bit of a dock in the film but the book shows him as just a confused and misguided guy who is willing to do some crazy shit to save his missus, but who still thinks he can turn the tables on the real bad guy. Who can't relate to that.
