In your typical gaming pc, how long should I expect parts to last and how do I trouble shoot common failures?

They should last a very long time. Many many years. They should last you so long that you will probably upgrade them long before you get the chance to see a problem with them. That's assuming you care for it properly. If you make sure you have good airflow, monitor temperatures, only overclock your CPU/GPU if you definitely know you can cool them properly, regularly clean and remove dust from inside your case, etc etc... Then you should be fine.

If it's a high quality product without any malfunctions, it should last quite some time. All you can do is dust them, keep them cool, etc, etc. Everything else is luck.
