This sums up my idea on religion

I don't understand how in the year two thousand and thirteen, people can still believe in magic and witchcraft that was orignated by a bunch of confederate lunatics who were taking advantage of people's ignorance. Even with the majority of the Bible debukned bullsht by science - People still believe in a religion because they were raised with it and everybody else beleives in it. Then, even when argued upon with logical reasoning, people refuse to stop believing due to fears of going to 'hell'.
Religion gives people false hope; like how people try to pray to God to relieve them of their debt. Or whenever some old person wins the lottery and they said that they prayed every night and how God helped them. Do these people not get causation does not equal correlation?

Religion provides comfort. Religion is far older than the "confederate times", going as far back as Zoroastrianism, which gave the basis of duality in religion: That's why there's good and evil in religion. [url=http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zoroastrianism]Zoroastrianism[/url] basically provided the base for most of the religions today. Christianity, Islam and Hebrew are perfect examples. They derive from the basic idea of it, which in the Zoroastrianism belief, the "good" will give you eternal happiness while the "evil" will make you miserable for the rest of your life. Religion is much, much older than you think. I, myself, am a Catholic, but I'm not a heavy practicing Catholic. I consider myself a Deist, which basically means that I believe there's a supreme being in the universe, but I don't think that that supreme being actually works in our world directly. It provides people comfort. People enjoy comfort. Saying people who enjoy comfort are idiots is pretty much a bigot move. I respect peoples' opinions equally until they start insulting. Then my respect for their opinion slowly goes down until the point where I don't give a damn about their opinion. Don't start with that.

Suppose your father and mother were very religious, and wanted you to stay jewish so you could say a prayer for them on the anniversary of their death, something they want. I honestly don't care if people believe in religion. If they use it to better themselves and actually use the teachings to help people than that's fine by me. It's when they force it on others and use it to influence laws is where is becomes a problem for me.
