The problem with crafting is that it shortens the grind and shortens the lifespan on whatever activity the craftable weapons drop from.
Once folks got the patterns from Episode 1, suddenly seasonal activity playlists were dead. Players got the loot and left.
I have trouble finding folks to raid with because once players have all the patterns, there's no loot to chase in the raid.

Now you have the choice: Either dedicate your life to D2 or leave. Those that leave are the winners in this scenario. You have trouble finding players because most of the smart ones chose to leave - and crafting had very little to do with it.

This! This right there! There's a reason why people liked to play VoG a lot in Destiny 1. Because they gave us one normal mode and a hard mode. The normal mode was perfect for the average player because the mechanics were simple and easy to do, even without a mic (even after they changed the part at Atheon, where you could choose 3 of the 6 players to get teleported). Now it's about communications, 15 minutes of stupid or overcomplicated mechanics to do damage phase at bosses and revive tokens, which is basically hardmode from D1 except dumber. And they wonder why they game is bleeding players.

I can see that but if the loot chase is going to be mostly random, and gear, perks and or stats are not going to be focusable it’s a lot to constantly grind, particularly long activities like raids. An example of just how attritional the non crafting system can be is the Marcato-45 HMG that I am using, it took over a year to drop close to where I wanted it and it’s a fairly common weapon drop. That loot chase duration is completely unacceptable in my opinion, and I can only imagine how long it would take to do so for a raid weapon. I understand crafting short circuits the loot chase for some players but it’s also incredibly beneficial towards others, who don’t have the time, patience or luck with the base system. If bungie is going to devalue crafting they need to do significantly better at providing alternatives while accounting for vault space. Particularly with the whole loot system and in game economy being reshaped at the time of removal of important aids.
That loot chase duration is completely unacceptable in my opinion, and I can only imagine how long it would take to do so for a raid weapon.
I did more raids in d1 than in d2 for that reason. I learned to just take what I get when i get the completion, then move on. No matter the perks or stats. Only the gambling addicts keep playing the same raids over and over to get "rolls". They don't care if the content is good or bad, don't care how many runs it takes to get the desired loot, they just want the high after the chase. The drop when the slot machine stops spinning. Crafting fixed this by giving you an actual reward, instead of doing an activity and not getting anything useful.

Exactly! I have essentially all but given up on pursuing specific loot in any activity, because even though certain things would be nice the gauntlet to obtain it has little to no long term satisfaction. If the loot chase and meta is looking to be as bad as it is coming off from Twids and other sources during EoF I suspect that I won’t be playing for much longer.
