So I went to craft my retraced path, and the first two frame options were cranial spike 3 and 4. I put 3 on, crafted it, and it still has cranial spike. Tested it, it works in pve, actually ramps up the crit damage, not fire rate though. Not sure if the image link will work, I'll edit if it doesn't I can't seem to replicate it, but this is crazy.
