I haven't played in a while, so I'm super behind in light. I thought IB would be a good way to level quick, but when I went to redeem my tokens, surprise.
I have to get pulse rifles kills. My pulses are at 750. They barely tickle other players.
I'm not necessarily using pulses. I'm playing with whatever the game throws at me at the highest light. If the game says 2 snipers, then I play with both until the weapon drops. Ok, not really. I used the best light level weapon I could.

It gives you an on level pulse rifle. Same for each step, you get a hero's burden for the smg, a wizened rebuke for the fusions and a swarm for the (bugged) gl kills.
-
You say you have played before so you are probably aware that Iron Banner always factors in your light level.
-
Draw a non random roll pulse out of your collections.
-
The quest itself is fine. It just shouldn't hold packages hostage.
-
This new year also takes into account new players, so this gimmick might seem to fit. We have quests to look forward to as of last season
-
I agree that the quest feels like an unnecessary and arbitrary excuse for more grinding by holding your packages hostage. But IB has always taken light levels into account since the beginning.
-
IB has always been level advantage enabled.

So infuse some or pull one out of collections.
