I've heard that replacing the HD with a SSD speeds up loading times.
That's probably not an answer you were hoping to hear though.

I’ve heard the same. I just don’t know how to go about that. I have friends that plug in a SSD into one of the front USB slots and then do things that way. Is it an easy process if what you’re referencing is different?

Replacing is easy. Official PS4 guide Google search will produce instructional videos as well. Original PS4 does not fully support SATA III (SATA II speeds), which explains slower load times. PS4 Pro has full SATA III support. I recommend searching for benchmarks comparing external to internal before making a decision.

Yeah I have the first generation PS4, the one with the 500GB HD. Would an upgrade to a SSD still be an option since it’s an older console and not the PS4 Pro?
-
The upgrade is still an option and beneficial. See this benchmark article for some numbers.

You could go the same way as your friends and get an external SSD, it's certainly easier. If you get an external drive then it's just a case of setting that as the install location. I do that, but with a 4TB external HD. You could replace the internal HD with a SSD, there are instructions on that at a lot of sites bit I've linked one below. Replacing the PS4 internal HD isn't hard so don't be put off doing that. https://www.ps4storage.com/replace-ps4-hard-drive-with-ssd/
