The two share a bond dictated by Destiny that cannot be rewritten, no matter how many memory wipes they may endure- Star-crossed lovers that manage to find each other again and again, and fall headlong until they are inevitably reset and have to start the process all over again. Military-oriented and a natural born leader, Merric has taken over heading Daybreak in the wake of Nik’s death after the Gap. In battle he is capable and confident but not cocky- as a Hunter, Merric understands the importance of caution and patience and is often unwilling to put any of his teammates in harm’s way for the sake of completing the mission, unless it’s life or death, but isn’t afraid of making the decision to put himself in death’s path if it means saving a life. To his friends, Merric is gentle yet stern, and will empathize with a broken heart but isn’t above laying down the cold, hard, logical truth. Although his priority as a Guardian should be to serve the Vanguard, Merric puts his duty to helping Laila retrieve her fractured memories first, always, to prevent her from carelessness in her pursuit of them. But Merric also has memory issues of his own, and he is sometimes plagued by visions of his past lives even when wide-awake; but unlike Laila, Merric knows better than to dwell on these thoughts, for fear of losing his mind to them, because he’s seen what it does to Exos. And although he frequently encourages her to just leave them alone, he knows he cannot stop her and settles instead for protecting her from herself. Among their friends and confidantes, their long-term involvement is well known as something to stay out of the way of, even after a fresh hard reset. And although it has sometimes taken years for them to find one another again, it never ceases to amaze their friends how they would fall in love over, and over, and over again every time without fail.
