The two share a bond dictated by Destiny that cannot be rewritten, no matter how many memory wipes they may endure- Star-crossed lovers that manage to find each other again and again, and fall headlong until they are inevitably reset and have to start the process all over again. As a Hunter, Laila is stealthy and fierce, focused and resolute, a gifted Bladedancer and a mentor to many of the Shadowsmiths in their time before the Gap; as a friend she is patient and wise, a fount of sound advice and gentle understanding, which has made her many, many friends (and admirers) around the tower and in the wild throughout her long life. But in spite of her façade of serenity, Laila faces her own struggles and can be stubborn as a mule. While humble, sweet, and mild-mannered to everyone she meets, she can also be prideful and cold when her friends are treated poorly or her skill is brought into question. And while she’s very aware of what she’s capable of and knows her limits, sometimes that pride will drive her to recklessness, to the point of endangering her life. A Thanatonaut by nature of curiosity and desperation to understand the fragments of her past lives and reclaim her memories, she spends a lot of her downtime lost in thought, and once in a while, chasing death’s coattails when danger looms. While this has led to tension between her and Merric, he remains patient and willing to help (in any way that would NOT risk death or irreperable harm) in spite of her desire to work through it alone. In the events of the Taken War, Laila tracks down the deceased Nightstalker Tevis and takes up his bow at Cayde’s request. She’s a natural and takes to the Void like a fish to water, one of the best he’d seen in a long while; however, it doesn’t sit right with her, and she tucks the gift away, not thinking much more on it until Daybreak’s encounter with Oryx. At the end of their rope and out of options, as her fireteam lays wounded and vulnerable around her, Laila realizes what she has to do. In a last-ditch effort to save her friends, she tethers Oryx  and holds him down to give them the opening they need, but Oryx would not be defeated so easily. As they end the fight, he drains her light and she nearly dies, nothing left in her ghost but a faint spark that was fading fast. In desperation and fear of losing her, Merric leaves the rest of Daybreak behind and breaks for the tower, enlisting the help of Banshee and Lakshmi; although he also attempts to recruit Cayde, the hunter declines for reasons Merric would never understand. After a week in limbo fighting for her life, Laila awakens a blank slate as Laila-6, with no memory, a new personality, and a newly attuned affinity for Void. Merric spends the next eight months getting to know her all over again, while Cayde broods over the fact that he’d been right when he said she could come back “different”. Following the events of the SIVA crisis, Cayde ushers Laila follow the path of the Thanatonaut (something Merric had been unwilling to do) in hopes that it would force-trigger everything to fall into place. It does, and she is reborn again as Laila-7, back to her old self and devastated that she had forgotten her friends, but grateful to Cayde for his help. She currently subs both Arcblade and Shadowshot, her new self able to host both elements without problems.
