I love it! Great idea!
Some thoughts:
1. Really play up the idea that minions of the darkness are stronger in the dark. This was mentioned in the very first mission but never expanded. Wish it was. Anyways, maybe the hive are ultra sensitive to light (if right after the traveller repelled the darkness) and areas with lighting are "safe zones".
2. If it does take place right after the traveller saves us, maybe have a scene where we find a hive wizard peeling the light from a newly formed ghost? Also that's what scared me the most in the grimoire.
3. Have one of your team that was swarmed by thralls appear later. He's been force-fed a worm as an experiment by a wizard and he is now some kind of mindless, feral creature that's hunting you for your light (you're not a guardian but dredgen yor says in the grimoire that life is a small spark of light).
4. Possible ending 1, get rescued by a young Toland? Everyone's about to die and he shows up, Nova bombs the enemy and brings you back? I'm unsure about that, just saying ideas off the top of my head. :)
5. Possible ending 2, you die. If you did (fill in the blank) or collected certain hidden items, you get a post credits scene where a ghost finds you and resurrects you as a guardian. You are Toland!

You just went to town with this. I love it. I also like the thought of ending two. That'd be one hell of a back story and would give great insight on Toland's initial obsession with the hive.

I was thinking the same thing! Love a good suspenseful movie/game. Loved Alan Wake and Until Dawn. I originally thought Destiny would have some frightening moments (like the Flood from Halo). Anyways, threw this together just now. Used my phone so quality sucks. http://m.imgur.com/BDrAzQk

If you want a terrifying point in destiny. Go into the thrall cave in the grottos at level 8. As the British would put it, "I think a bit of wee came out just then"

To end some events the house of exile fallen could come in and start fighting what was chasing you

An exile Barron ambushes a knight that gaining on you.

Yea, that would make sense. Or a wizard about To kill you and 3 dregs jump on it and you run. Or thrall are gonna kill you and a skid starts blasting them down. But you can also get killed by them if you wait long enough sorry for the long post just posting my thoughts on the fallen
