I am currently in a search for a fairly cheap rental home to at least get out of the crowded apartment lifestyle. Trying to find a decent rental option (that isn't a scam) is starting to prove difficult (as I am doing a solo rental and trying to keep the monthly rent under $900/month).
I am sure some of you out there are either currently going through a similar process or have done so in the past.
Does anyone have any good tips for finding good home rentals? Search methods? Are rental listing prices negotiable or are they typically set in stone?

Vary rarely are rental rates negotiable. Some exceptions do occur though. If the owner/landlord lives (for example) next door, they may be willing to adjust the rent if they know the renter, are sure that they will be a good neighbor, is a low risk of damaging their property, or develop a friendship/attachment to the renter. Also, some landlords will be able to reduce rent if the renter takes on some of the landlord's responsibilities or tasks, such as lawn maintenance, or projects that improve the property. Solo rental of a free-standing single family home is not easy or cheap. Depending on region, neighborhood, size and condition of the property, $900 a month rent is just not even in the ballpark. Roommates can increase your budget, but they are an added complication and/or risk. Best of luck to you.
