Yesterday I completed the Prison of Elders, Level 35 challenge mode with great success.
The rounds were tough, the struggle was real, but with a team of fully equipped 33's we were able to triumph both the first 4 rounds and the last boss, Skolas.
Here's where the conspiracy comes into play:
We've all seen the videos of people NUKING the last boss, Skolas (http://youtu.be/KTFeGM9CHDk).
This strategy involves strictly using Gjallarhorn at a 365 attack value with Weapons of Light (still undetermined by data sources that WOL affects rockets) and all team mates simply fire away. Of course the strategy involves waiting for 5 mins for your synth to recharge, because you will need to fire an entire heavy ammo reserve, refill, and fire it again - this 5 min downtime is obviously worth it compared to the hour+ you will try otherwise.
HERE'S THE CATCH
Our fire team went into the level 35 so excited it was insane. We had trumped the hardest part of the game and knew that with all of us having Gjallarhorns that this was possible with ease.
We decided to play devils advocate and test the waters of how the encounter actually works.
There is only one word that comes to mind when recalling those feeble attempts - INSANITY.
The boss fight isn't realistically feasible. The timers create a need for burst damage, his health creates a need for high quantities of said burst, the critical events are close to impossible with solar burn, the event is so scattered with enemies just pillaging your fire team - it actually gave me anxiety.
So then we tried the Gjallarhorn technique modified to give us a disadvantage.
We decided that clearly the "Full Gjallarhorn Burst" is the only logical method for completi the fight. It has to be done quick and dirty like most other solar burns. However, we wanted to see the minimum parameters on damage output to see the allowable tolerances for lower geared groups. This was in an attempt to figure out exactly the minimum damage needed to kill Skolas.
We tried every variable imaginable. Here's where it gets technical.
Options we tested:
-Everyone downlevel to 33 (CONSTANT)
-Two (2) Hunger of Crotas 365 *failed
-One (1) Hunger of Crota 365 *failed
-One (1) Solar Machine Gun 365 *failed
-Unequip heavy ammo raid boots *failed
-Two 365, one 331 Gjallarhorn *failed
-One Truth 365 *big fail
I can keep going....
Summing up the conspiracy
So if you consider the constraints above, anything in those damage categories simply isn't enough for the nuke Skolas' world apart strategy. No matter how many times we waiting for my Weapons of Light bubble and our synths, how many different combination of high powered solar weapons, there was only one option - Three (3) Gjallarhorn 365 @ Full Level 33 .
However it's not just about the Gjallarhorn. The developers are hinting at this being the intended strategy. There is no way to beat Skolas without insane top of the line gear. This includes:
-Gjallarhorn
-Exotic shard for upgrade of Ghorn
-Raid boots with heavy perk
-Abundance of heavy synths
-Time and Effort
All of the above require vast amounts of time to obtain. Even if we discredit the entire list, a Gjallarhorn is still 100% necessary for completion. - people have been playing since day 1, every day and still don't have this weapon. It is the only weapon in the game that outputs damage that high. Bungie will never sell it via Xur.
Thus, the only way to beat the final Prison of Elders (35) is to have an incredible disposal of weapons, armor, consumables, etc - all which require an immense amount of play time and even furthermore, luck.
This was Bungie's intent. They want the game to be played as much as possible and only when you have all of the items and time in will the ball be in your court for this final boss fight. Otherwise, slam dunk for Skolas. Every. Single. Time.
End.

Изменено (Apweber42): 5/22/2015 2:18:41 PMPosted here yesterday saying I was gonna try with all 33s. We beat it but rounds 3,4,6 were a little rough and took some time and we had to stagger when we used synths on skolas so that we could keep constant rockets on him to keep him from teleporting to us. Took about four total hours but we got I done. Got my Titan helmet from a variks chance

Or you could just level up to 34...
-
2 отв.All this because he's upset they can't beat the 35 as ALL LEVEL 33's
-
1 ответwe did with ine guardian down. 2 gjallies tho at 3 lvl 34s
-
Thanks all for reading.
-
I give it 2 weeks before the casuals will be able to do. Mainly because of cheeses
-
Honestly...the problem is that you were 33. Of course it's super hard no matter what gear you're using. You're doing like 40% less damage than if you were 34. So I'm guessing if you went in at 34 you could probably beat it without all using gallys.
-
Wow guys 200 replies. Awesome keep giving your feedback, all input is welcome!
-
3 отв.Maybe I'm wrong but wouldn't you do more damage as a lvl 34? So a little further down the road I bet 3 lvl 34s with ascended hunger of crotas or w/e could still knock it out
-
1 ответWoL affects the initial impact DMG of the rocket but doesn't boost WPR's or splash damage.

1 ответИзменено (SegmentedMoss): 5/21/2015 7:31:26 PMWow, you mean you couldn't beat it on hard mode literally TWO days after the expansion released? Jesus, settle down dude. You have all the time you want to play and level up to 34 and get ready for the hardest end game content currently available.
-
2 отв.Of course you had trouble, of course you all needed max ghorn. YOU WERE 33! 1 level disadvantage means roughly 30% less damage. 2 levels you are doing like half damage. 2 weeks doing level 32 and 34 PoE and you can be 34 which will make skolas easy.

13 отв.And if Xûr sells Gjallarhorn this week, then their intentions will come through as sincere and not intended to undermine anyones effort, in fact, it will just increase the association of euphoria and Destiny, making players more likely to play Destiny. I have 6 Gjallarhorns, and I strongly believe that Xûr must sell Gjallarhorn to satisfy the players that have been playing since release, as it is now mandatory for higher level end game completions. Also, I would like to see if three level thirty-fours with one HoC and two Gjallarhorns could take out Skolas.

3 отв.That was a very interesting read. Thanks for taking the time to write it.
-
Datto and his team beat it as intended with all the mechanics. Didn't just gjallarhorn him at the beginning
-
Wow what a waste of life reading this. I beat it earlier today, we all had gally but by no means do you need to have it the way we beat it. Get to level 34 and hunger or and other solar rocket will do just fine
-
The nuke him all at once was a real struggle for me and my friends because where on last gen, we couldn't get our inventory screens up fast enough it takes almost 10 seconds to use another heavy ammo pack in combat, i honestly don't no how we even beat him lol it was crutchy as hell the entire run we got him to just before half health ran round the map like idiots then some one shot him again so we got the poisoned chalice so we where passing the poison dieing reviving taking the poison off each other with seconds left we managed to re group and went to nuke him again by the time I got my inventory up and ate a heavy ammo pack my teammates had killed him, it was a good laugh though and so rewarding because of all the clutch moments

5 отв.Изменено (your f(r)iend): 5/21/2015 7:54:35 PMat 34 you could beat it with dragon's breath or hunger
-
1 ответI laughed when I first did it and experienced the poison effect. I could not help to think that this was the developers way of saying "TRY TO CHEESE AND SOLO THIS BITCHES!" I thought it was great how the AI literally chases you around the whole map. It is so much FUN with right group of experienced and skilled players. Like any end game experience, you must be prepared with max weapons and gear.

11 отв.Изменено (Artesians): 5/21/2015 5:18:01 PMOr... You can get good at the game and stall him with Black Hammer :). It's end game content, and is intended to be difficult... However, PoE won't be too difficult once we get enough practice. Solar Burn just happens to be the burn this week, and Gjallarhorn just happens to deal the most damage. Saying the encounter is impossible without Gjallarhorn is just surrendering yourself to a lack of gear, rather than admitting a lack of skill.

When u r level 34 I'm sure you could probably use another weapon
-
7 отв.I went in with the most powerful guns in the game; 365 Fatebringer, 331 Felwinter's Lie (Vendor purchased,) and 365 Gjallarhorn. He's THE endgame boss of HoW; the best possible gear in the game is definitely needed to kill him.

You're all level 33, this is a level 35 activity. Your data/conclusions are bad and you should feel bad.
-
5 отв.So what your saying is...I'll never beat PoE 35 because I will never have a Gjallarhorn? Ok. Challenge accepted.
