Well this is a trap for developers; think about WoW , how many tried to copy it? Is there time to play anything else? How many devs failed with WoW copies? Is there space for a Destiny competitor? Warframe maybe… so many try and fail, Fortnite? Maybe APEX, so I hope we will still have single player games to enjoy, or new experiences, problem is the FOMO pushes players to engage all the time, me? I only do with Destiny, and not always… I passed of entire seasons and expansions when the game Didnt made me happy.
I think this is actually a real problem with MMO's. They're obsessed with engagement to the detriment of the games.
Counterpoint to that is all the people who would be screaming for content if MMO's didn't structure their games that way. It's kind of a losing battle, but I would much rather sacrifice engagement than game quality. I'd rather spend 10 hours a week on a quality game, than having to run the same dungeon or strike or battleground over and over and over to the point where I have no time to do anything else. I'd much rather be able to play 3 different MMO's than have to spend all of my time in one of them by design.
But, that's just me. Like I said, people on the other side of this issue would be screaming about nothing to do. But, realistically speaking, isn't it more financially sound for a game not to have to spend the money on servers pushed to the limit because of these engagement requirements?
I guess I don't really know the answer to that question because it's way out of my area of expertise.
Still, I know what my personal preferences are, and they involve quality over quantity so I can fully enjoy more than one game.
