I ask because as far as I can tell, from having played the game myself in the open periods, and looking at their progress, that it's really just something that isn't going anywhere at all. The audio-visual experience is beyond anything that I have seen in any other space game, but apart from that, it's just like E:D, wide as a sea, shallow as a puddle. I've played E:D for 1100 something hours, and it doesn't really feel different to me IMO, it just feels less polished.
From not really being able to show off anything in the last few years, changelogs and updates being full of a whole lot of talking but saying nothing, to Squadron 42 being basically completely halted, and all the release dates getting constantly pushed back (It's original release date was 2015), needing a "road-map for our road-map", and insane amounts of bugs and issues that are often game-breaking doesn't inspire a whole lot of confidence. The performance is awful even with mid-high end hardware.
I would really want to get into it myself, but my time in-game and comments from critical people really turn me off, so when it comes up, I want to gather as much info as I can. They might be making progress but holy hell is it slow.
Don't get me wrong, I don't want to talk anybody out of it, but it just seems grim. Maybe the experience is different if you purchase it and get into it.
Ah, I gotcha. I'm curious when was the last time you played? Most recently I've seen videos of FPS type stuff, with derelict ships on the ground and whatnot...looks really cool. Also keep in mind that they're still in alpha, so there's still a lot to polish. I see your point though, how it might not be that different from E:D. Cheers!
I've played it a little bit more than a year ago last time, but judging from the progress they made from their previous open sessions compared to their last few open plays, It's not much to be honest. Where there is detail, there is a lot, the already complete sections are amazing to look at and walk through, and it's jaw dropping to just do a fly-by next to them, but apart from that, the game is just full of a whole lot of nothing just like E:D.
They also have only 1 star system, while E:D has our entire galaxy, but it's strange to compare them since it doesn't make too much difference.
