Ah, so your suck comment is about his personality, not his talent.
If it were a likability contest he'd probably behave differently.
Like his team mates Ego Maniac, and Cry Baby, they can all drive. It's their post race (and sometimes pre) attitudes and comments that make me dislike them.
I get that. I feel like a lot of that is theatrics, but frequently there's a good bit of actual "who they are" coming out. There's a lot of media training going on in modern NASCAR (compare early Dale Jr. interviews to later ones!), but the façade... that doesn't always stay in place.
Sounds like you feel about Denny like most folks I know feel about the Busch Brothers. I never got much into the whole persona thing or following one driver, just preferring to watch the race(s). Despite living in NASCAR-Land, I usually watch Rolex/ALM/Tudor/USCC (or whatever they're calling it now) and Super GT out of Japan with the occasional WRC thrown in for variety.
Having said all that though, I do think that Boris Said is a pretty cool cat!
As far as the Busch Bros go, Kurt became evened out over the past several years. He's hot headed on the radio, but he's mellowed out his post race life and attitude.
Kyle, I thought he was maturing after the Daytona wreck a few years ago, but that humility didn't last long.
Yes, today's drivers are schooled on their professional personas way more today than they were a decade or so ago. Dale Sr. never really altered his image, but most since then, at least the prominent ones have.
I too watch nearly anything 4 wheels on a track.
F1 (except I can't get the ESPN channel they changed to this year), Indycar, NASCAR (Cup, Xfinity, Truck, ARCA when it's available), ALMS, Continental Tire GT, Lamborghini Challenge,... even some dirt track stuff every so often.
I just found the new IROC based series - SRX that Ray Evernham and Tony Stewart have just brought out. It's fun to see them start that type of series up again. I just would like to see them open it up to a few more venues other than small tracks.
