That's a convenient excuse to come up with after being called out...
Except even that doesn't make sense. They don't give the same sentence to people for different situations. They could get probation or 10 years in prison dependong on their records and what actually happened.

That's why he said educated guess, he knows the guys so might know about previous things they would have done Actually, not necessarily true. I have two options: 1) believe it, feel sorry for him for about 30 seconds and move on 2) analyse what he said for levels of -blam!-, think about it then call him out expecting him to admit to lying. At this point I've wasted at least 10 minutes of my life

He added in the excuse you are pointint out after being called on it. His original story made it very clear that it wasn't a guess. He made statements on their punishment. There was no probably, maybe, or should. Be removed a chunk of his story as this was pointed out. You've wasted 10 minutes of your life either way. We are sitting on forums for video games lol.

Let's say you just got beat up by some idiots. You estimate they're going to get three months for it. You need to vent over it. You do, on a forum which you regular. You're not going to be polite or thoughtful about it and you don't expect to get called out on it because it just happened to you and you're not thinking about the likelihood of legitimacy. There are several possible theories, just think about it.
