Are videogames dying in terms of creativity and innovation?
Pretty obvious what I'm asking here.
Are they dying in your opinion?
In mine they are. There isn't anything innovative or new nowadays. The same games over and over and over again, SLIGHTLY better graphics and textures, a little different gameplay mechanics but in general it's all the same. And in all honesty the grand majority can't hold my attention for 1 hour.
We've had lots of the same for the past few years. It's like devs are just set on recycling ideas, making sequels, making -blam!-ing HD remakes of games that haven't even been out for 3 years. And everyone just eats it all up. Seriously the mainstream gamers are the same as the people that listen to mainstream music. No thinking or anything, they just eat everything big corporations throw at them and act like it's awesome. No critical mentality, brain is always off.
I love videogames and it saddens me that the market has gone so stale and so devoid of creativity and innovation.
So give me your opinions guys. Let's have a nice discussion about a topic that surely everyone would find relevant around here.

2 通の返信You know why we get repeats of everything? Because that is what people want. Gamers say they want change and innovation, then attack anything that changes. When Nintendo tried to make gaming more interactive, people attacked them. When Microsoft tried to make the Xbox more than just a gaming console, people attacked them. On the flip aide every COD sells millions of copies for a glorified graphical update. This is what gamers want. There are plenty of innovative and new games and ideas, but they don't get the attention or support of the sequelized games. A good example is the Halo 5 beta where after gamers complained about lack of innovation in the series 343i decided to listen. 343i is trying to take the old Halo formula and make it new and fresh, I think they are doing a hell of a good job too, but no matter where you look all you'll see is "OMG 343i is ruining Halo, why can't they keep it the way it used to be". Gamers moan and lament the current state of the industry then abuse anyone or anything that tries to break that mold. It's ridiculous that it happens and yet its true. Even the most vocal of those supporters of change and innovation likely have a fair share of a sequels they complain about.

There is innovation, but whether it's for better or worse is left up to debate. Sure there are the Assassins Creeds and CoDs of the world that feel the need to release the same game every year without change, but games like star citizen, no mans sky, just cause 3, and dragon age inquisition show that companies aren't afraid to break the trend. Even Halo is changing for the new age, but like I said, for better or worse.

Depends. As far as I see it, they're allowing the players for creativity. In this case, my friends and I play BF4 and we have loads of fun just creating our own stunts. The game is simply just a platform to do whatever you want.... [spoiler]just my opinion, no h8 m8[/spoiler]

I think the problem is more so limited to first person shooters and specifically competitive first person shooters, there is a large amount of innovation in indie games, and in all other genres of games such as RPGs. For as long as books can still be considered new so to can video games have new and exiting stories, you are just playing the wrong kind of game. FPSs dont tend to focus on story and tend to use similar mechanics (simply because they work) they have noticed that when they try and change people complain, and sails are better when they do very similar things to before (maybe just a little different look then before). In the end i think it is a lack of innovation in the FPS realm not so much the gaming realm in general.

Not in innovation. Granted a lot of FPS are similar. And there's a spate of games coming out that mix an established genre with free running. But there's still some great ideas coming out the industry. However for creativity id say yes. I haven't played a single next gen title (non ported) that actually had a decent story. The only exception being alien isolation. Genuine spoiler: [spoiler]And even that just ran out of steam. No final boss fight? No great revelation?[/spoiler] I appreciate that having games more realistic in terms of graphics and physics eats up Dev time and system resources, but I'd far rather wait 4 years for a decent game that can really draw me into the world and mythology than wait 2 years for something I'll maybe play for a month and never touch again.

It seems you are looking at gaming through a small window and not really seeing the bigger picture. There are a tonne of great original games out there. Just dont expect them to come from some big name publisher (for the most part)

Personally I think gaming has taken a step backwards, all we get lately are sequels which are reskinned and touched up slightly which are definite sellers (looking at cod and AC) or brand new titles that are having to be overhyped to stand a chance (destiny and watchdogs are good examples) The gaming community have become very demanding in what they want and if something goes slightly wrong then forums explode about it, the beta for evolve is a good example, I've seen thread after thread slamming the game in its beta. The problem lies with both the community and developers. Developers turn out half a game, or a game that's unplayable, players demand too much and a lot of the time just complain instead of giving good feedback. But considering we'll still spend money on games, developers will keep giving out these sorts of games, I'm not sayin stop buying games but developers need to focus more on the game than the money, go back to the 90s and look at games then, good graphics and amazing stories not like now where it's the other way around

If its dying its mostly our fault. We get games strictly for the multiplayer nowadays n not for a deep entrenched story. Companies see this n start to bs with the story but make sure that the multiplayer is top notch. Although i don't think creativity n innovation in the gaming world will ever die. I do think we need to stop buying games only for the pvp. Bc the industry is designing the games around us n our desires. Ive literally heard ppl say -blam!- pve idc about a story i just want to play pvp n im not just refering to this game. Think about it buy a game with a story and multiplayer on release date what do all ur friends do 5 mins after u turn on ur console to play? Invite u to pvp. It use to be go through the story beat the game then get on multiplayer now i can barely get to the story bc 5 mins in i get invites for pvp on release date. If we just start caring alil more about all the content we get not just one aspect of it i think companies like bungie will adjust. If not games like destiny will continue to be released . Just my 2cent

Not to say there aren't good multiplayer games, like Team Fortress, Halo, Plants Vs Zombies Garden Warfare. Also, a game for the Wii u called Splatoon looks really great. Check out the trailers for it. But I agree we need more inventing of new gameplay and not another CoD with a different logo. Another example is The Behemoth with Game 4, it's like a turn based strategy game but with The Behemoths style, which is amazing. [spoiler]Oh, what a wall I built.[/spoiler]

Theres been so many sequels/remakes over the last 10 years, its just rediculous. Call of duty has felt the same for many years, which disapoints me. I just want to play a game that has a different feel to it. Not really sure what exactly I'm looking for here, but maybe someone else knows what I mean.
