My bad, but from your words it really looked like you did the purchase two times.
Anyway I can't double check this issue because on my PS store (EU/ITA) there wasn't any information about the free PS4 version.
But still the information about PRELOAD support stays on the PS4 version, which is still not the one Bungie suggest you to buy from the PS4 store.
About the stealth edit you claim, it's weird they didn't add that blurb on the official page about the upgrade as well when they did, for me it appears that they just forgot to copy paste the entire thing.
I'm with you on the fact that they didn't managed this properly, but can't help to think that those ones that bought the game twice should just actually pay more attention.
I do agree with you about people needing to pay more attention.
My issue here is that, even after 20+ years of internet availability, people still don't tend to understand what's going on a lot of the time. It's not that they're stupid or wilfully ignorant, mind you. It's more because there are a lot of idiosyncrasies online and you are often told, e.g. by support, to do something either opaque or outright nonsensical to a layperson, in order to make certain things work. I think, given that, it's very possible that people could see their cart had a $XX.XX item in it, and the statement that $XX.XX would be taken from their wallet, and still believe that the people actually performing the transaction were correct when they said to go ahead and complete the transaction for their free item.
I mean, I've already seen reports of it, so clearly some people simply thought they were supposed to do as they were told. After all, those instructions were given by a multimillion dollar company that ought to know how to obtain its own products properly. It's not unreasonable to think they knew something that the buyer didn't about how the discount would work.
