Got to be careful on creating challenge though. Have to find a balance in this type of game. It isn't meant for uber challenge. I don't know how many people would want dark souls in space.
I am one of the people who think rewards need to be challenged.
Dark Souls is actually not a harsh game at all. Everyone beats the game in the end. Not everyone has beaten games like packman or Donkey Kong.
When I say challenge, I mean the ending of the game should be something not most people see. The greatest loot should be revered for those who actually have the skill to earn it.
But that is my opinion and most of the world I think disagrees. People prefer "everyone's a winner" and guided rail tours instead of fighting for victory.
I am being mean though. Destiny should be a game that focuses on fun for all, not puzzling challenge based on the community that supports it's previous games.
I agree that reaching the end of a game should feel rewarding, but if the game is so challenging that only a select worthy fewer ever see the games conclusion then developers wouldn't succeed in the gaming industry. Players like to have progress for their time investment. If only the select few who poured hundreds of hours into a game ever saw its conclusion then there would be a serious problem in the games design. Yes we do live in a society that does want everyone to win when reality dictates otherwise, but we shouldn't really run our games on a survival of the fittest philosophy. We play games for entertainment. It is not entertaining when one never feels like they are accomplishing anything. That is why games are designed with the majority reaching endgame in mind. They aren't necessarily going to make it easy (just look at Dark Souls), but they make it an achievable goal to those who stick with it.
I could careless if big game corporations are not maximizing their efforts for the sake of money. Some indies make games with no budget and make little profit, but put their game in the world with an aim for a modest living and happiness to thought you chose their game.
They don't cater to the masses, they often make the game they want to play and if others share their opinion, then those people also have the game for them.
Progress measured by xbox achievments and being given victories is not something to be proud of or what this society should strive for.
Most games I play because they make me laugh with friends, the ones where no one cares to win first. Others because I want to compete with friends and these ones need challenge and glorious victory.
The competitive ones need to have worth and challenge otherwise, there is no weight to the competition.
But we are just conflicting opinions now.
I would prefer Destiny to make players actual legends, then to give everyone a small yellow trophy saying good job in terms of competition and challenge.
The simply fun side though. with just dungeon crawling coop. That's alright.
