Text chat systems suck. Well at least it would for an fps console game such as Destiny. I understand that some people would want to role play but lets look at some of the negatives for a minute. 1. Typed chat is slow. 2. It requires a chat window and even then it would be an unwanted distraction. 3. The majority of the players won't even use it making it an unnecessary burden to implement. 4. It will break away from the immersion Bungie is trying to achieve. You don't type to people right next to you in the real world do you? 5. Trolls. While it isn't the same as a 10 yr old screaming in your ear (which you can mute by the way) it would allow for a lot of nonsensical messages to pop up on your screen constantly (eg. a message consisting of only the letter E). Don't get me wrong. Text chat has its place in the gaming community as well, but thats exactly where it is right now; on computer based MMO's. Remember Destiny is NOT a MMO. It simply has some MMO elements. At its core it is still going to be a FPS which as we can all agree requires voice chat for fast and effective messages, strategies, etc. Who knows... maybe Bungie will implement a voice modulator in the game as well. That way all the guys playing girls and all the girls playing guys can have their actual voices modulated to sound like the opposite sex. I have seen (and fooled around with) several modulators in the past and while all were not great there were a few good ones. Bungie does not only have the resources but the talent as well to create and include a great voice modulating system. Hell they can even make it customizable to the point where players can adjust the pitch, tone, etc. to their preferred settings and honestly create a unique game. Either way, wether its text based chat or voice modulating, you must also consider the people that will use such systems for something other than gameplay.

  • The topic is the option of text chat, not its implementation a primary source of communication. I suggest a discrete text-chat system. A fellow player sees your name, picks it out in a roster of players in the area, then sends a message. The message is sent to your message folder in your menu, and a notification tab appears somewhere on your screen that doesn't interrupt gameplay (much like the menu system on this fine website).

  • Actually I believe that it still would interrupt gameplay but I see what you are trying to say. Think of it this way... if you are a soldier in the middle of a fire fight you won't be pulling out a cellphone and texting someone else. The same can be said about text messages via some kind of hud. Such a thing will require a suitable amount of focus as the player will have to read it. Using your example however I would propose another alternative. A player sees your name in a roster of players in the area and picks it out. From here a direct connection request is issued allowing a private voice chat between the two players. Such a thing would require little to no reading and won't break immersion.

  • I like that idea as well. Though I'm still sticking to my proverbial guns. Though the text-chat option is like any written form of communication, and should be used at appropriate times, such as after a firefight or in the Last City.

  • Lol... well you stick to yours and I'll stick to mines. I still believe that voice would be better (as well as safer) in the long run. For example, if we were to pair up once the game comes out and do a few quests together I would prefer to simply talk via chat rather than to type responses. If you were a girl RPing as a guy or vice versa I personally wouldn't care what you sounded like and I don't think you should either because for the most part you're going to end up playing with specific groups of people after a while. On a side note its always a point of comedy on both ends when guys try to sound feminine and girls try to sound masculine. It makes for great comedy and conversation and can possibly lead to interesting friendships.
