Communication: Type vs. Talk

This topic was proposed by my friend and fellow forum-browser, GUARDIAN ZERO: "We need typed chat as an option in this game if role play is going to be possible! Let's face it -- Nobody sounds nearly as cool as their character looks through their $20 Xbox microphone. Bungie claims that the important stories aren't the ones they tell, but the ones we tell. Well much fewer stories are going to be told without role play, and role playing can't happen with out typed text. Therefore, we need type chat as an option!" I concur with ZERO, and would like to add that communicating verbally is also essential to cooperative gameplay, especially in fast-paced FPS combat. So world, what are your thoughts?

  • Text chat systems suck. Well at least it would for an fps console game such as Destiny. I understand that some people would want to role play but lets look at some of the negatives for a minute. 1. Typed chat is slow. 2. It requires a chat window and even then it would be an unwanted distraction. 3. The majority of the players won't even use it making it an unnecessary burden to implement. 4. It will break away from the immersion Bungie is trying to achieve. You don't type to people right next to you in the real world do you? 5. Trolls. While it isn't the same as a 10 yr old screaming in your ear (which you can mute by the way) it would allow for a lot of nonsensical messages to pop up on your screen constantly (eg. a message consisting of only the letter E). Don't get me wrong. Text chat has its place in the gaming community as well, but thats exactly where it is right now; on computer based MMO's. Remember Destiny is NOT a MMO. It simply has some MMO elements. At its core it is still going to be a FPS which as we can all agree requires voice chat for fast and effective messages, strategies, etc. Who knows... maybe Bungie will implement a voice modulator in the game as well. That way all the guys playing girls and all the girls playing guys can have their actual voices modulated to sound like the opposite sex. I have seen (and fooled around with) several modulators in the past and while all were not great there were a few good ones. Bungie does not only have the resources but the talent as well to create and include a great voice modulating system. Hell they can even make it customizable to the point where players can adjust the pitch, tone, etc. to their preferred settings and honestly create a unique game. Either way, wether its text based chat or voice modulating, you must also consider the people that will use such systems for something other than gameplay.

    • I personally don't believe in interrupting FPS gameplay to type "THUS DO I SMITE THEE, WICKED FIEND OF THE HIVE!" *shrug* Personal opinion though. To compare, I wouldn't write what my character would say in a tabletop RPG just because I've judged my voice inferior to relay my character's thoughts, and those games happen a lot slower, mechanically.

      • It would be nice to have an in-game manual typing chat, for those who don't have mics could at the least, be able to communicate with others, and for example, not have to load up the Xbox guide menu, then find who they want to send a message to and so on, but could instead relay a message to everyone around them. and those with mics could simply speak back to them, and it's heard through their TV or whatever they have, like other games.

      • Well I think there will have to be some way to communicate with other players without voice chat, even if it's just a setlist of messages or prompting the other person to trade. Otherwise how would we meet other people and start playing together if your in a party (which most people probably will be) or if you don't own a mic?

        • I believe it should have text & voice chat, even on xbox/ps. I would buy that little keyboard thing that attaches to your controller for that. Seriously who wants to constantly hear people spamming trade offers?

PSU did have a decent chat setup. You could talk publicly only with those you make a party with, and could setup up shortcuts for basic conversations you'd likely have with strangers. This could be a nice feature to go off of for Destiny. Edit: You could of course manually type out something, but given that not everyone has a chatpad, the shortcut feature was really useful.

Voice chat should be default, and text should be a secondary option that allows players to turn it off if they don't want to see it. That way everybody gets what they want, and nobody's fun is interrupted. And for all the people who claim text-chat CAN'T work, you're just plain WRONG. Shining examples of intense, real-time MMO action games with effective text-chat: Phantasy Star Online, Phantasy Star Universe, Final Fantasy 11, Tera, Rift... The list goes on and on! PLUS the first on the list, PSO, was also the first successful console MMO on Dreamcast which pretty much made console MMO's possible to begin with. It was made on much less capable hardware than the Xbox 360, PS3, PS4, and what will be the Xbox 720. You really think a next-gen system can't handle type chat? SERIOUSLY? I'd also like to point out that using a game like Defiance that is not only still in its beta stages, but looks like shit to begin with is NOT an equal comparison. AND that quite a few people who posted opposing type chat say they've never used it before, OR that they don't role play at all. Just to make sure we're all on the same page -- When I say role play, I mean I get online, and I get into character. I stay completely in character while I communicate with friends, not once sending an OOC message, and I switch personalities when I switch characters. Plenty of people seem to be defining role playing as some casual, "Yeah I make up a story about my character on the website and then just play the game". Or, "Occasionally I drop into character and make a comment my character would make". Those are not role play. How about this? Instead of being selfish, and saying, "Well I don't use it, so I don't want them to make it," like about half of you, how's about you show some compassion to those of us who have friends who they've known for more than ten years and have NEVER seen them out of character? My entire family plans to buy this game role play together, but not if there isn't type chat. Without it, nobody is going to RP. The constant chore of voice-acting and thinking up/delivering clever lines on the spot is too much work, nobody will bother. I've seen it happen plenty of times before. We need typed text as an option, and so far nobody has come up with legitimate reason for us not to have it. Bungie has claimed that the stories we tell are the more important ones, but, as I said above, much fewer epic stories will be told without type chat. If you don't role play, that's fine, but please don't restrict the ability to for those of us who do. ESPECIALLY not for the nonsensical reasons given thus far. That is all I ask.

Destiny would be godawful for roleplaying. How the hell would you even do type chat on a console? The only people who would care enough to use it could just hook up a laptop and use IRC, anyway.

          • I would have text as an option, but voice as a default. Voice immersion has never bothered me. I have more concern for the person behind the character than the character itself. Though there was another topic on using proximity voice being overheard by enemies, in which text would be helpful.

          • If the current Defiance beta is anything to go by, implementing text chat into a console game will be pointless. Almost nobody will check it, and a lot of the people that do will just spam crap.

          • Well not many people have any kind of key pad for the Xbox or PS so I doubt that it would be in the game. And there is no PC version so there is even less of a chance of it having it. I think people will have to rely on the forums or maybe even the app or some other kind of Destiny-related thing to write about their character and the epic adventures that they and with them.

            • Defiance are trying to do the text chat and believe me It's not working, 2 reasons that stick out for me are that it takes too long and that the game doesn't tell you about it

What I never got was why there was never a text chat system implemented in console games. I mean, the infrastructure is really easy to set up (Hell, Call of Duty 4 had it on Xbox already, as shown by modding spammers), so why does no one ever allow someone with a chatpad/keyboard to chat in console games? Edit: I'm not suggesting that this replace voice chat in any form, as that's ridiculous, but it'd be cool as an add-on/alternative.

            • for an FPS game i think voicechat is the only way to go. it does take away some of the magic of well written text chatting, but consider how fast the action is and whether a player would put down a controller to type on a keyboard. For a console I definitely think voicechat has been and will continue to be the main way to interact online. text chat is also helpful for deaf people i should mention, but they have pc based games. if bungie does decide to support deaf players i guess voice-to-text translation could happen on the fly but i doubt this will ever happen for a lot of reasons including technical limits of a game not designed to be a voice-to-text translator. so back on point, while FPS voicechat might lack those long philosophical text chats that pc games might invoke, it's also the only means fast enough for fps combat. in reality, for text chat based games for combat situations they all use teamspeak or ventrilo anyway as it is.

            • I'm ok with there being as little role play as possible. Text chat works on games like WOW, because they are PC based. You have a chat window that can be shown or hidden as needed, and you can guarantee every player has a full keyboard. Unless Microsoft is going to start bundling keyboards with every controller, text chat is not a viable in-game communication feature. But more importantly, the need for a chat window would either clutter up the screen, or require using one of the few buttons on a console controller be mapped to toggle it. I don't think you'll ever see in-game text chat, unless it's touted as a "messaging" system, rather than a "chat" system. What might be cool, would be if the companion app was aware of the current group of players that are in your shared environment. Then you could send messages to your "lobby" and chat with the other players via your smart phone. But in any case, my personal opinion is voice chat only. I'm not going to take the time to read something someone wrote on my screen, and I'm certainly not going to be typing anything.

              • I agree with what he said and you as well. All I can say is for verbal, PUSH TO TALK ONLY. Why? Here's why...nobody likes hearing somebody whine and complain that they died. In push to talk you don't get that because nobody is gonna push a button just do that. In push to talk you send and receive necessary information for the most part unlike mic systems such as COD. I hate the system in COD...so I just end up muting everyone. As for BF3...it's better because you can choose to only talk with your squad. So it's more precise on who you're talking to. But still...that system would work better with push to talk. That way there is no background noise on the squads mics and everybody can hear who is talking unless there is background noise for only them. That background noise is only limited to one person in that situation, the whole team or squad isn't effected by it. To me that is the best viable way to implement a voice chat system. Plus unwanted commentary do to thinking out-loud is minimized or gone completely so it's kept to ones self.

                • I also like to RP as a girl character, and sometimes not having a mic makes everything annoying because, lets face it, typing anything on a controller is slow. I've already thought about this and I was hoping for little macro type things your character can do, like salute, rude gesture, cry etc. I always love doing those to people.

Just to clear up a few things for future comments -- I am not, in any way, insinuating that text should be the sole, or even primary form of communication in Destiny. I'm only stating that text should be an option for those who wish to have it, especially in the case of role-players. I've role played on MMO's for my entire life, and not ONCE have I seen a voice-only MMO that had moving role play. I would also like to say, to DeathByReason's point, that voice communication is absolutely CRUCIAL to all FPS games, especially Destiny. In order to coordinate on the battlefield a team needs call-outs, strategies, retreats, and so on. Thus: I only want text as a side option, especially since I often role-play as female characters, and no amount of voice-masking can solve that problem. Now that I've elaborated on my position -- Thoughts, gentleman?

                  • Are people's voices really that important? I mean it's not likes going to be on "Destiny TV" where everyone expects people to sound like they look like. Its about having fun, and the most fun is when you don't just sit there for 30 seconds to type a single sentence. Its about having fun with friends, and if you're friends voice is squeaky and he can't type a sentence fast enough are you going to find someone else? I would rather enjoy making my story with friends than having people just just can type fast. Sure typing would be cool for players with no mic, but you can make you're cool stories with mics too.

                    • Voice is way, way, way, more important than text chat. You cannot coordinate via text chat (That's why in MMOs they now implement their own voice comms for people to communicate). Text is slow and unreliable. People often don't check their text chat anyway. And roleplaying your character via text is not essential to making an RPG great (and most people don't participate anyway - if you look at WoW, you'll notice far fewer RP servers, and far fewer people participating in RPing than just playing).
