Dear Offtopicians, find out what you like and wear that. Just be aware of decency. Otherwise don’t waste time worrying about what others think about your clothes.
No, just because you’re attracted to extras in a Hallmark Christmas movie doesn’t mean these kids should acquiesce to your taste.
I made it along in life with finding a woman that enjoys me and how I presented myself without bending to the (at the time) pressures of Affliction tshirts, bejeweled jeans and general -blam!- that came with the Axe smelling sycophants that most of the basic public school valley dime a dozen girls thought they’d find after their morning dessert lattes from Starbucks.
Moral of the story is, looking down your nose over fashion isn’t a good look on anybody.
Saying “let anybody wear what they want” is the reason we have teenagers wearing tails and fishnet stockings. Everybody deserves to be taught that personal style and presentation matters. It’s a huge confidence booster when you put a little effort in. I don’t know what your teenage years were like, but clothes matter to me and just about every young person I know. A good sense of fashion tells people you care about your appearance and you’ve made an effort to find your style and dress accordingly. Great for you and your wife, I know a lot of people who don’t try to dress in any special way, they do just fine in life. Style is a personal choice and that’s to be respected, but I enjoy leaving the house with confidence in my conscious clothing choice. My list of “rules” aren’t even that difficult. Just simple things to half remember. I can see why you’d find the tshirt comments mean, but I stand by what I’ve said. Advertising interests which can be considered nerdy does nothing for you when you’re making an effort to dress better.
