As of right now (and the last 3 hours) AFK material farming in forges is now the 2nd most played activity (by “active” players) in D2.
Patrol - 28%
Forges - 16%
Story - 9%
RAIDS - 9%
QuickPlay - 8%
Gambit- 7%
Strikes - 6%
Competitive -6%
Menagerie - 4% (RIP Menagerie)
Nightfall - 3%
Heroic Adventure - 1%
Reckoning - 1%
You a big raider? Raiding is tied with people playing story missions. Just food for thought. Not close to the same number of people farming forges for mats.
You a big PVP player? There are more people farming forges for mats than in QuickPlay and Competitive combined.
There are a lot of reasons why these numbers come out the way they do. Many factors and influences, but that’s not my point, the point is that these are the numbers right now. This is what they are and it’s a fact.
Think about it and figure out what it means for you.
To me it’s not exciting to see that the endgame is now afk farming mats in forges. I don’t feel like that is a meaningful endgame experience.
Edit: To be clear I’m not condemning the AFK farming method personally. I think it’s perfectly acceptable if you’re being conscientious and lowering your light so you only get matched with other farmers. This method has been around since forges launched.
Update:
As of right now (Thursday July 18 at 8:50am it is showing Forges as the number one activity at 28%
Another thing really why AFK farming still exists is because of people going back to school soon, people going to work, people traveling, or people leaving to go to places. and they want mats while their gone. Or sleeping too
-
I bet the total players signed in value is WAY up too since all the farmers are logged in all day
-
People wouldn't need to AFK in Forges if Bungie didn't have that stupid resource throttle where if you open up too many (4ish) resource nodes and chests, it locks you out from obtaining anymore loot from them until a minute or two passes. Not to mention how they nerfed how much planetary materials we used to get after they got rid of the rare planetary materials. I miss having a chance to get 1~10 materials on one node. Now it's 1~3.

AFK farming is the least troublesome issue in Destiny. None of you knew about it for the SEVEN MONTHS its been a thing.

SaferMurderweaponにより編集済み: 7/19/2019 8:01:37 PMThat's funny considering that it was on top when I left for work and found that I had gotten weaseled when I came home. I would assume a bunch of other people did as well. Watch it spike back up tonight as people go to sleep and not stay spiked daily till Monday when people are at work/school.

I hope they don’t ban people for this I don’t do it but I can see the ban hammer coming . tread carefully

What’s the benefit of farming materials in forges? I mean, if spider doesn’t sell it at a fair deal, I’d rather wait for another day. I have been doing a forge lately because of the tribute bounty. I see no other reason to venture in those things anymore

It really says a lot about how destiny’s economy and activity rewards are structured. Also makes you think about how blind to the majority the ‘elitists’ are when they suggest destiny be more stingy in their materials. Not sure why but maybe they’re just masochistic.

Been AFK farming for about 2 days now and have racked up well over a thousand mats. I just do it overnight so it doesn't really interfere with gameplay, but it's still insane that it's a necessary thing. Especially for the more casual players like myself who might get an hour or two a night a few nights a week, AFK farming is the only way any of us filthy casuals would come close to get the Bad JuJu catalyst. It's an amazing game, but it caters to the streamers for sure.
-
To be fair, the amount of planet mats you get for going AFK in a forge for 2+ hours is WAY less than if you drop 200+ shards for spider and that takes like 5 minutes.

Might as well have my Guardian doing some work while I’m at work. He’s gotta learn to pull his weight around here and not just loaf around on the couch watching Netflix all day, while I’m busting my ass at work. It’s good for him.

I think this stat tells you everything you need to know about who the real Destiny players are and they are not the try hard's who want to earn everything fair and grind into the dirt, no. They are the people who want to have fun and don't want to waste their time. Simple and bungie never really understood this, never understood it's own game.
-
I think this just one of cases where I can go on my backlog of games and play something else until Shadow Keep is available. No need to worry about those tributes until then... :p
-
Worth mentioning, many story missions you can't simply go back in play. Only very specific ones in specific places that many probably ignore. Not like D1 when you can just play any of them at any time. Objectively one of the worst choices they made going into D2.
-
I was doing it for 16 hours and it kicked me out good thing I get on soon I guess.

I agree with you, if we decide to do this, it most definitely should be done with others in mind. If you are not in a situation where you load in solo....then you suck. Plain and simple. I’ve had enough issues loading into the forge for legit runs that I wouldn’t want others to experience several bad runs in a row. So my take on it all is simple, farm away Guardians but do so with others in mind. To address the topic of meaningful....well no it’s really not. It is only meaningful if we need one of those two materials. It definitely should be done when we are away for work, school....sleep (if one does that). Doin it instead of playing is well...as (I believe) you said somewhere in a response....why are you even playing if the game is reduced to that for you? (Not refering to you) On a side note, has anyone tried farming in a full Fireteam? Also do Fireteam medallions benefit any? Also guiding Light on ghosts or maybe the ghost perk that awards additional faction loot (I believe those haven’t been a thing since yr 2 dropped)? Just trying to figure out if there is a way to max out on more than 4 a “run”.

Pretty sure people used this AFK method to gain the Lore from Ada, prior to it being patched
-
People are doing this as much as possible now because we all know bungie is going to kill it asap...just like people farming menagerie for god rolls and now after patch it is basically dead except for people trying for triumphs or power leveling.
-
This specific afk farming isn't affecting legit player activities, so I don't see what the big deal is. I still play as often as I can, and not having to farm mats means I can spend my limited free time enjoying activities I want to do.

Care to wager how much time people spent in D1 shooting at a cave? Efficient farming will always be a thing in any mmorpg. It’s only negative if you spin it that way.
