I would like to point out the distinct lack of fun it is to be close to 60 years old and forced to complete a quest step were I must do PVP. To add insult to injury, my progress is penalized.
You aren’t forced to play. However, you won’t get the gun(s) if you don’t. I too don’t like pvp, but I also know that pvp is gonna remain part of the game. If I want a gun/armor/etc, then I know I have to do whatever it takes to get said item.
personally, I'd be fine if they just axed pvp from the game completely... matchmaking feels so broken and slanted more often than not, on top of the fact that the way bungie networks for pvp has pretty much always rewarded crappy connections while punishing good connections (the reason lag switching is an actual problem ever since the days of halo 2 in every bungie game) the number of times i've been rolled because of "lag armor" (certain enemies in pvp teleporting around and hits simply not registering on them a majority of the time) is something i lost count of a long time ago.
then there's the whole obvious lack of any skill based matchmaking on top of that... it throwing stacked teams of high skill players at a bunch of randoms, often times many of which seem to have no clue how to play an objective or what direction the bullet leaves their gun from.... while said stacked team is sprinting around nonstop headshotting and deliberately spawn trapping people. yeah.... getting spawn farmed is just *so* much fun /sarcasm
is a lot of this fixable? sure... they used to at least attempt skill based matchmaking back in the halo days... stacked teams should be slanted to face other stacked teams whenever possible as well, and of course dedicated servers would go a long way also...
will any of this actually happen though? maybe when hell freezes over...
