Where in the world is the EDZ?

I may be missing something really obvious, but I don't think they ever really state where the EDZ is, geographically-speaking. I'd assume somewhere on the very eastern edges of Europe, as it was a place one could travel to by foot, theoretically. But then that, in turn, begs the question of where exactly the Cosmodrome was, basically existing right outside the city walls - which, at least by in-game accounts, is simply marked "Old Russia." I guess it's not of the utmost importance, but just for sake of understanding the world Bungie put us in, I was wondering if anyone knew whereabouts these locations are - if only in approximate location relative to each other. Thanks for the help, I super appreciate it!

  • The EDZ in destiny 2 stands for the European Dead Zone on the planet Earth

  • EDZ is placed along the border of Switzerland and Austria (and Liechtenstein). As biist said, the details match up almost perfectly with eastern Switzerland. Plus, there's plenty of salt deposits there. The signs are all in German, and street signs say 'Graubunden' (one of Switzerland's cantons) and 'Zervreilahorn' (A mountain in Switzerland). Now I have another theory - that of where the Last City is. In the first mission of Destiny 2, 'Exodus', the player leaves the last city and arrives at the farm in the EDZ. To do this, the player has to cross some very steep and snowy mountains. To 1. be within walking distance of the EDZ (Switzerland) and 2. remain steep and snowy year-round these mountains would have to be the Alps. There is a mountain in this mission that looks strikingly like the Matterhorn. This mountain is directly north of the Last City. Now, what major city in Europe is directly south of the Matterhorn? It's Turin. Milan is also nearby, so depending on perspective it could be Milan too - but in my opinion it is most likely Turin, because its angle lines up much better with the Matterhorn in 'Exodus' As an added bonus, the Last City seems to be built on an extremely large valley/basin, and there are mountains closer to one side of it than the mountains near the other. This lines up perfectly with the location of Turin (Milan too, but again, more Turin). - the Alps and hill formations in Italy near Turin form an environment very similar to that of The Last City. Now, let's continue tracing the steps of the guardian as he/she climbs through the Alps toward the EDZ. After seeing the Matterhorn and the last city, the trail makes a turn and they start heading north. There is a confluence of two rivers or streams - at either the town of Zermatt (or Stalden further down the river) or Les Hauderes. However, the view of Les Hauderes would be obstructed by more mountains. Plus, Zermatt (or Stalden) lies along the route towards the EDZ. The player starts heading down the slope, down into the valley. They fall, and are picked up by Hawthorne. This would take place somewhere in the river valley near Zermatt. The player is airlifted to the farm, and then is dropped off at the shard in a place called The Blackened Forest. Based on the location of the EDZ, that name is no coincidence - the shard probably landed somewhere in the eastern part of the Black Forest, Germany. The farm, based on its flatter surroundings, lake and mountains above it, and proximity to the EDZ, it's probably somewhere on the northeastern (German) shore of Lake Constance. Which, by the way, is dotted with many picturesque farms. So, to sum it up: -EDZ is eastern Switzerland -The Farm is near Lake Constance -The Last City is Turin

            • Not related to the EDZ or Cosmodrome, but some people have been talking about the Tower. The Tower in D2 is not the Tower from D1, or even close to it. In D1, you could see other Towers around the Traveler. The D2 Tower is a section of the City Wall next to a destroyed Tower. That Tower is in the middle of the Wall. The D1 Tower is not. The wall is not a continuous circle, the ends don't meet. They split around the D1 Tower. In Homecoming, this is retconned and the Wall now runs through the Tower, but you still can't see the social space from the Tower when looking at the Wall from the Tower North. You can see the Wall where the social space should be, but it's not there. If you look behind the Tower in D1 or in Homecoming, there is nothing but open space then some mountains. In the D2 social space, there is some sort of factory being the blown up Tower. We are unable to see any nearby Towers in D2, so it isn't one of the 2 visible in D1 or the original social space. We are most likely on the other side of the Traveler. Sorry for the length. TL;DR: D2 Tower is on the other side of the Traveler from the D1 Tower.

              • The Cosmodrome is based off the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Southern Kazakhstan. The Tower from D1 is hypothesized to be in Chile. No verification to the truth of that though. The EDZ is where Germany, Austria and Switzerland border. Salzwerk is German for Salt Mine. Zervreilahorn is a street sign seen in the EDZ which is the name of one of the mountains in the Swiss Alps. Dark Forest is likely a nod to Black Forest in Austria. No idea where the Tower in D2 is. Easy assumption is the Traveler never moved and we saw other towers in D1 besides the one we were in, so it's still Chile but no real proof of it.

Primarily Switzerland and Lichtenstein, with some of South West Germany. There is a sign by the Sojourners camp that is a mountain in Switzerland

                      • The Cosmodrome is in Old Russia (used to be Russia of course) and we know the City is very close to it, although not pressed up directly next to it. Thanks to the fact that in D2 everyone was able to walk to the EDZ and Farm from the City, it’s safe to assume that the EDZ in D2 is located in Eastern Europe. The mountains u can see from the City and the EDZ are probably the Ural Mountains that divide Russia and Europe
