I don't raid

I've been playing Destiny since the beta. Love it. Do I see issues? Sure, but by and large I love this game. Anyway I mostly stick to solo PvE. Bounties, daily heroics and vanguard playlists across 3 characters keep me busy enough. In finding people to do the nightfalls with I've met a couple guys who raid. And occasionally they invite me to raid. Most times I politely refuse. Today two youngins invited me to do a fresh vog nm run. I was hesitant so they proceed to assure me that it was easy and they could talk me through it. Most times I say no. Today I said yes. It was just the 2 of them so i found another group of 3 on a LFG site and away we went. It. Was. A. Sh!t. Show. I won't go into all the details but here's a couple highlights. Youngin number 1 quits midway through the templar. "Gonna go eat". Youngin number two gets mic issues. Wipes repeatedly. The other 3 from the LFG site want to kick him but decide against it. I hold my own. But at the platforming section I fail repeatedly. And the 2 that I came with can't talk me through it, ones gone and the other is effectively sans mic. At atheon it gets worse. I'm completely lost. And I don't want to admit that I'm a raid virgin. We're wiping more than someone with IBS. One of the other guys leave. We try a couple times with 4. Wipe, wipe, wipe. And I don't know what I'm doing. Eventually I leave. And I feel like a piece of sh!t. Anyway I send a message to the LFG guys. Apologized. They were solid, we ruined their raid. Exiting that message I notice a message I sent to random like a week ago. While on patrol I saw a 26 trying to open the vog by himself. I sent him a message telling him it's a 6 man thing. He replies with a "wanna do it?" I say that I don't raid and direct him to a couple LFG sites. It's the "I don't raid" that catches my eye. I don't raid. It's a truth that I embrace today. I've read a ton of reviews and articles about destiny. The raids are often cited as the best thing in game. Maybe for some. But I don't like relying on others, and I don't want others relying on me. I won't be raiding. Atheon, nor Crota, nor the enormous shank that I assume will be the final boss in the HoWs will fall by my hands. I just don't find it fun. It's long, it's stressful. Sure the rewards are unique and better than anywhere else. I want a fatebringer in destiny more than a hovercraft in real life. But that's the sacrifice I'm willing to make. Bungie's clearly focused a lot of attention in the raids. I understand why. So this isn't a "fix this!" post. Just a rant. A very long rant. Sorry. Edit: thanks guys for the support. At it's core this community is a great one. To be clear this was my 3rd vog attempt from a random invite. The other 2 were far worse. Yeah I should have told the LFG guys that I was a noob, but after the other issues with the 2 I brought with me I was trying to avoid a "then there's this fu€king guy!" moment. Stupid. Thanks for the invites to raid but I meant it when I said I won't be raiding. Not for right now anyway. Thanks for reading! Edit 2: corrected spelling. And I'm on Xbone BTW Edit 3: last one, promise. Okay so a lot of comments that I should "raid with my group". Again, I appreciate each and every invite. You guys rock. Now scroll down. There are tons of comments from raid noobs down there. They need the help, the guidance and the patience that you are so willing to offer to me. Leave no Guardian behind. Also a lot of "don't let one bad experience..." comments. I totally hear what you're saying. The Raids are meant to be the pinnacle of the Destiny experience. Everything is heighten. The time investment, the challenge, the required communication and teamwork, the rewards. Everything is set to 11. And as such the act of finding a team and tackling it is emotionally investing. Which makes the ultimate success and ensuing lootgasm all the richer But it cuts both ways. The fear of failure, shame of sucking, the disappointment in a fireteam's desertion, the annoyance of the OP's alliteration. All these emotions are heightened as well. You can't have one without the other I guess. No risk no reward. Personally I'm saving my emotional investment and unwavering commitment to the other thing in my life: good job, great friends, an amazing GF and a house that almost always seems to have something breaking or falling off it. That's not a judgment on the rest of you. I admire you die hard raiders. And I will continue to watch your youtube vids with awe and admiration. Good luck and RNGod's speed Guardian. TL;DR Turns out DeeJ's been writing a Lethal Weapon sequel in his spare time. Lethal Weapon Engram. Titan Murtaugh and Hunter Riggs are revived by a Joe Pesci voiced Ghost to battle the Darkness and investigate the disappearance of the Speaker's teenage daughter, the Texter.

Totally see where your coming from. If you have a regular group of friends that all get on and communicate well then i imagine the raids would be really fun. To those of us that don't have that luxury and have to find random groups to join on here/LFG etc etc then it can go 50/50 on which type of fireteam you join Type 1 - You end up in a fireteam where your the only person with a mic and your not sure who can hear you/who actually gives a shit or type 2 - you end up in a team of 4 or 5 that already know what they are doing and just need a couple of helpers. The latter is obviously the best as these raids just fly by and reap the rewards but damn they are hard to come back. I stayed up late the other night after mrs + baby went to bed to try and get VOG hard done before reset as i knew i would have any other time to play. After trying and failing with 4 different *type 1* fireteams over the space of 5 hours i eventually found a *type2* team at atheon so i thought balls to this and just joined that to get it finished. Then i got the stupid VOG sparrow for the 3rd time in 4 weeks along with 3 shards and 3 energies. Love this game sometimes :)

Hey BarMatt. I was just like you back in November. Moreover I didn't even touch Crucible with a bargepole. I knew I was missing out on the game's best content (raids), most fun (Crucible) and hands down best weapons (all raid weapons). I had already foregone the idea I'd ever possess a Vex Mythoclast, Fatebringer or Vision of Confluence. Then I got exotic bounties (Thorn) and was forced to play Crucible. I started loving it. I thought that maybe I should give raids a try also. The rest is history. I cannot help you with Crucible but I'd be more than happy to help you out on the VoG raiding on normal, taking you through until you understood the game mechanics. Raids are complex. The strategies are multitiered. What works on hard may not work on normal and vice versa. It takes on average at least five to six completions to fully grasp the basic mechanics. It takes even longer to master them. Only the VoG has seven check points. Knowing what to do in each of them, the strategies, the coordination takes considerable time. Even after over 30 completions on VoG on hard across two characters I am still learning new strategies and hiding or sniping spots. The learning curve is steep and persistence and patience are required. Is it worth all the aggravation? Hell, yes. I now have all VoG raid weapons (except Hazen Vengeance) and all of Crota's End (safe Word of Crota and Song of Ir Yut). Fatebringer, Vision of Confluence, Vex; these are classic weapons that you MUST play with to fully flavour the Destiny experience. I won't be available on Xbox till after mid February. But after that drop me a message and I'll gladly take you through one or two VoG raids on normal. After that you can fly solo as it's all practice, practice and practice till your skills are honed.

    • I understand. I don't raid for many reasons. Top two being time & dedication. with 3 kids & one of them less than 3 months old I can't assure a team I'll be at my best, or even at my controller. & With all of life's little demands, I can't afford 3-4 hours in a row to raids. I've spent that much time logged on, only to have so many things pop up that I spend maybe an hour of that log in time really playing. With that I kinda of content myself being a level 31. I might be here awhile.

    • This is the best article on these forums. I was LMAO reading it in a Rorschach voice. "The raids are often cited as the best thing in game. Maybe for some. But I don't like relying on others, and I don't want others relying on me." Comedy gold.

      • What is important in a raid game is that you have a group of dedicated people and good communication. No headset... kick! Because without a headset there is no communication. Too bad you were in such a poor raid team. It's okay to never done raids before and most players will understand and help you through it. Just be honest about it and tell people you never done it before and you don't know what to do. I hope you find a solid team if you ever going to give it a try again. PS: If you want to get Fatebringer you have to beat the templar in VOG hard mode. On LFG there are people who have a checkpoint on the templar in hard mode and looking for a team. So maybe you can get Fatebringer without doing the complete VOG hard raid.

      • I didn't raid for a long time. I'm not a fan of randoms or children, and my friends couldn't get a team together that didn't immediately start talking about the proper employment of solar grenades against bosses... It's taken some time, but eventually a disparate group of LFGers & friends of friends have formed who can actually get along with each other and want to actually shoot things. No flapping, just calm analysis of tactics, no squealers, everyone would rather eat cold food or starve than abandon their team, people are online at sensible times of day and aren't trying to do midnight raid starts... It all adds up. Maybe one day you will find a group that fit you as well, and you will no longer "not raid" and go on to be someone who others rely on to lead raids. I do disagree with one thing you said though: Hovercraft>Fatebringer. Fact. If I had a hovercraft I would never be on Destiny, I would be somewhere on the edge of a lake repeatedly driving from land to water and back again while giggling like a psychopath, punctuated only by grinding my day job for fuel.

      • Dude, you should definitely hang in there and try again. It can be frustrating if you get a shit team but with a decent one the Vault is so much fun! I've done it about 30 times, mostly on hard, and never with the same team twice. Hit me up on Xbone, I'd be happy to run it with you, and any other Raid noobs. Btw, the Fatebringer is AMAZING and totally worth the hassle alone. The Vision of Confluence and Mythoclast are also great as well.

      • I agree with you whole heartedly only difference with me is I'm not in a rush to raid but I still want to because of the reasons you mentioned how things can go wrong. That's why I always attempt to join a strong & experienced team. That way I can be directed & just follow orders.

      • i wonder if the statistics have changed since November - as back then only 15% of people had completed vault of glass on normal out of 3.2 million daily players. Doubt it will be more than 25% by now, making it a minority event for destiny players as a whole..

        • Oh man, I just love waiting for 5 other people. I stopped doing cruci so I could help these guys raid (biggest mistake) they said "oh no man, we'll just cheese him, it won't take long" Against my better judgement I joined to help. 20 minutes later we finally enter the raid (crota checkpoint) I hop on Boomer duty. 20 minutes later their little cheese isn't working (it works, they were just doing it wrong), okay we better orbit, get some advice. 20 minutes later we're about to get back in to the raid, fireteam leader "i'm just going to go eat quickly" *back to crucible* *appear offline* I don't raid anymore because I don't play videogames to wait for 5 other -blam!-ing people, regardless of how good they are.

        • It would be cool if there was things that you could only do solo, that rewarded well. Something like: The activity is level 31 and can only be done solo. It could be similar to a raid but you can do it solo. It could have checkpoints so you don't have to do it all in one sitting, kind of like a cross between a nightfall and a raid, but with respawns.

        • Don't dismiss raiding totally champ. Get a group together and do it that way - no lfg. So long as someone has a couple of completions you will beat it eventually. It might take several hours over several weeks, but it is worth it. The team your with has a massive effect not just on completing but on enjoying it. I found most of mine through lfg for nightfalls/weeklies. You tell fairly quickly if you want to play with them again.

        • I think it's Xbox One. My boyfriend has tried doing VOG on Xbox One multiple times and they either don't get past the confluxes or can't beat Atheon. I've been raiding for about four months on the 360 and there are some times where it gets difficult because of who is with us, but most of the time the raids are a breeze. My bf got a copy of Destiny for the 360 and did VOG with me and a couple of my raiding buddies and we finished it quickly and without a lot of problems, he was excited. I think it just depends

        • I've found that LFG for the Crota raid to be pretty solid, I haven't had too many problems with bad groups and we usually end up beating Crota within a reasonable amount of time. Lately though I've found the VOG LFG to be a complete gongshow. I've had a few experiences with groups for hard VOG runs lately that sound just like the one you had. Today I was in a group that just started confluxes and a guy says "We have to hurry and beat the raid in 20 mins because I have to go". He left about 5 mins later any ways. After he left, other people started continuously leaving and joining until we had a solid 6 again. The leader of the party chat also left the chat open so we had 10+ people in there all telling each other what they were doing in other games (I guess they were all friends) and not communicating at all about the raid we were in. We couldn't even get past the first two waves of oracles but they were talking about how they wanted the exotic chest and the vex mythoclast. It was pretty frustrating. Sorry for the long post, I had to rant a bit too haha.
