I don't raid

I've been playing Destiny since the beta. Love it. Do I see issues? Sure, but by and large I love this game. Anyway I mostly stick to solo PvE. Bounties, daily heroics and vanguard playlists across 3 characters keep me busy enough. In finding people to do the nightfalls with I've met a couple guys who raid. And occasionally they invite me to raid. Most times I politely refuse. Today two youngins invited me to do a fresh vog nm run. I was hesitant so they proceed to assure me that it was easy and they could talk me through it. Most times I say no. Today I said yes. It was just the 2 of them so i found another group of 3 on a LFG site and away we went. It. Was. A. Sh!t. Show. I won't go into all the details but here's a couple highlights. Youngin number 1 quits midway through the templar. "Gonna go eat". Youngin number two gets mic issues. Wipes repeatedly. The other 3 from the LFG site want to kick him but decide against it. I hold my own. But at the platforming section I fail repeatedly. And the 2 that I came with can't talk me through it, ones gone and the other is effectively sans mic. At atheon it gets worse. I'm completely lost. And I don't want to admit that I'm a raid virgin. We're wiping more than someone with IBS. One of the other guys leave. We try a couple times with 4. Wipe, wipe, wipe. And I don't know what I'm doing. Eventually I leave. And I feel like a piece of sh!t. Anyway I send a message to the LFG guys. Apologized. They were solid, we ruined their raid. Exiting that message I notice a message I sent to random like a week ago. While on patrol I saw a 26 trying to open the vog by himself. I sent him a message telling him it's a 6 man thing. He replies with a "wanna do it?" I say that I don't raid and direct him to a couple LFG sites. It's the "I don't raid" that catches my eye. I don't raid. It's a truth that I embrace today. I've read a ton of reviews and articles about destiny. The raids are often cited as the best thing in game. Maybe for some. But I don't like relying on others, and I don't want others relying on me. I won't be raiding. Atheon, nor Crota, nor the enormous shank that I assume will be the final boss in the HoWs will fall by my hands. I just don't find it fun. It's long, it's stressful. Sure the rewards are unique and better than anywhere else. I want a fatebringer in destiny more than a hovercraft in real life. But that's the sacrifice I'm willing to make. Bungie's clearly focused a lot of attention in the raids. I understand why. So this isn't a "fix this!" post. Just a rant. A very long rant. Sorry. Edit: thanks guys for the support. At it's core this community is a great one. To be clear this was my 3rd vog attempt from a random invite. The other 2 were far worse. Yeah I should have told the LFG guys that I was a noob, but after the other issues with the 2 I brought with me I was trying to avoid a "then there's this fu€king guy!" moment. Stupid. Thanks for the invites to raid but I meant it when I said I won't be raiding. Not for right now anyway. Thanks for reading! Edit 2: corrected spelling. And I'm on Xbone BTW Edit 3: last one, promise. Okay so a lot of comments that I should "raid with my group". Again, I appreciate each and every invite. You guys rock. Now scroll down. There are tons of comments from raid noobs down there. They need the help, the guidance and the patience that you are so willing to offer to me. Leave no Guardian behind. Also a lot of "don't let one bad experience..." comments. I totally hear what you're saying. The Raids are meant to be the pinnacle of the Destiny experience. Everything is heighten. The time investment, the challenge, the required communication and teamwork, the rewards. Everything is set to 11. And as such the act of finding a team and tackling it is emotionally investing. Which makes the ultimate success and ensuing lootgasm all the richer But it cuts both ways. The fear of failure, shame of sucking, the disappointment in a fireteam's desertion, the annoyance of the OP's alliteration. All these emotions are heightened as well. You can't have one without the other I guess. No risk no reward. Personally I'm saving my emotional investment and unwavering commitment to the other thing in my life: good job, great friends, an amazing GF and a house that almost always seems to have something breaking or falling off it. That's not a judgment on the rest of you. I admire you die hard raiders. And I will continue to watch your youtube vids with awe and admiration. Good luck and RNGod's speed Guardian. TL;DR Turns out DeeJ's been writing a Lethal Weapon sequel in his spare time. Lethal Weapon Engram. Titan Murtaugh and Hunter Riggs are revived by a Joe Pesci voiced Ghost to battle the Darkness and investigate the disappearance of the Speaker's teenage daughter, the Texter.

  • Ok, OP, here's what you're gonna do. Send me a private message on bnet with your gamertag and I'll add you on Xbone. I'm an actual raid veteran, level 32, more Crota kills than I can count. One of my favourite activities is helping new raiders through the raid. I've done it many times. Just yesterday I pounded Crota a bunch of times for people for no reward of my own. You don't need experience, just come along for the journey and I'll show you the ropes. I've had several teaching jobs in real life so I'm good at communicating and helping people. If you're hesitant about me being all talk, well, I've solo'd all of Crota's End, cheese free. Here's a few vids of me dishing out some one man justice on Crota: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D64L9K24UK0&sns=em http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L4n_KULs5fg&sns=em When the reset occurs I'll raid with you. I have a very tight group of friends who won't get mad or judgemental and you won't have anyone relying on you. It'll be a fun, relaxing team environment, we spend most of the raid just joking around anyway. I promise you'll get some cool gear and you'll enjoy yourself and maybe you'll even enjoy my company. I'll understand if you don't want to, it's up to you.

Raiding can definitely be stressful and somewhat subject to the whims of your teammate's skills. There are nights I'm especially tired and don't want to raid, even when I want to play that content, because frankly I don't have the energy to navigate the social dynamics of finding 4 randoms (I have 1 buddy I always raid with). That really sucks your groups have been awful. If those were my first experiences, I might not have kept raiding too, which means i would have quit Destiny months ago. Though you clearly shouldn't raid if it's not fun for you, it is in my eyes, by far the best content in the game. As others have stated, if you are ever going to try again, there are a few things you can do to increase the chance your next raid is a positive experience. The first is to always be up front if you are new, inexperienced, or need to be shown the ropes of that raid. After stating that, any future mistakes are largely your GROUP'S fault for failing to communicate well... Not yours. They signed on with informed consent for your inexperience, so to speak. Though you usually need experience to do this next tip, I usually prefer to make the group, as opposed to finding another established one. It's definitely more energy but it allows me a bit more control over creating a positive dynamic for everyone in the group. I usually end my lfg post with "must be chill and decent folk. :)" It's sort of my way of informing anyone who messages me not to be an asshole. If you can get a few experienced 31+ people for normal VoG, it makes it much easier. Everyone's usually pretty overpowered at this point, so 3 or so experienced players can usually carry an inexperienced team. That last thing I wanted to say is that I do understand why it can be hard to tell others you're inexperienced, because you never know how accepting they will be. But for what it's worth, some people ENJOY the "sherpa" role. For casual normal raids, I love taking a newbie or two along. :) That first time you play a raid is so exciting, so I love seeing how excited and appreciative people are. We took a lvl 26 last week through VoG and they were great. I believe he got a Found Verdict and The Last Word from it and I was really happy for him. I got nothing, but I was able to say "at least that new guy had a good time". My point is though it makes sense you are worried your inexperienced might hinder the enjoyment of others, sometimes it can actually enhance it.

        • It is better to be honest about never raiding so your not trying to hit atheon with the relic melee... Or just wasting everyone's time on your team, that too.

        • It took me about 20-25 minutes to get across the jumping puzzle the first time. Now I almost never die on it. Raids can be frustrating at first but if you get with a good group with good communication it's so fun and rewarding. I'm normally on in the early morning and I raid a lot. Add me if your on PS4 if you want to give either raid another shot. Jack3dJoe

        • It's nice to do your first raid with virgins too, trying to find a way to resolve puzzles. And no one has advantage on others because no one has clues. But it's true that it's more rare now to find a full team of virgins who wants to do the vog now compared to September last year.. Anyway don't give up its awesome ^^

        • Really you need to learn to do it as the only newbie in the group, my clan and I teach new people everyday, and in turn we see these people teach even newer people. VoG is very difficult to do with 3 new people, people don't need to rely on you or such, you could take a more chilled back role, such as not picking up relics :) If you're on PS4 and you change your mind about learning the raid, message me, we will show you how, that fatebringer won't be far behind you either

            • Sounds like you need to pick up a new game. This isn't me trying to be dick at all, but honestly if you are satisfied with the same boring content over and over think of how much fun you would have with a new, refreshing, long, game with a real storyline. The raid is the only reason most people are still playing this game, if not for them Id have quit months ago. Also rule #1, if they are young, don't play with them.

                • My first raid was crota..I have not even done the vog, it takes way to long, from what I hear.. So far this week I cannot finish the raid process, because each group I join we seems to not be able to kill him.. Finding someone good with a sword seems to be the problem. Another thing that annoys the shit outta me is people on coms, back when I was playing games back in the day we had this thing called roger wilco, back then we had effing etiquette, that meant no screaming babies in the background or living room background noise, what makes it worse is these people think they are cool, or think its ok for everyone else on coms to hear all the bullshit in their living room basement etc. So I think the part where bungie force us to play with a group kinda sucks for rare loot etc. In a sense it does not even seem worth it, to much work, and bullshit to put up with for the items.. Oh and of course they designed it, so that we are forced to do this torturous crap many times to get the gear upgrades etc. Unless you have a group of friends simular to you raiding or any multi player games on consoles is a choir. Way to many immature adults and children in this world now, and it does not seem to get any better when it comes to class and respect. Just Yesturday, as a matter a fact we had a random person join our party we were using for the raid, and his mic was all screwed up echoing making feedback etc. we said hey kid can you please leave we are raiding and your mic is messed up, (did not start happening til the kid came in coms), he tells us, no it is not him it is some other guy in the group.. SMH, as if he can hear his damn mic making the sound on coms... It's like when someone tells you you are being an ass hole and you say no I am not.. Some people are just ignorant.. Anyhow OP I understand, hopefully one day we can get some good video game AI, to where we do not have to deal the scum of the earth..

                • The raids are awful for a few reasons. Mainly, these three: 1. There's only -blam!-ing two of them, so they get stale REALLY quick 2. You can only get the rewards once per week. So unless you have multiple characters (and thus, I have to assume, are a -blam!-ing masochist), the other times you're raiding you're basically doing it out of the kindness of your heart. Engrams don't drop during raids, right? So there's literally NO REASON to do them except maybe for Eris Morn bounties, which are the worst bounties in the game. Well, tied with Iron Banner. 3. The raids themselves are boring, and they also share a ton of mechanics. It's basically insulting. "Grab this thing! Okay, you grabbed this thing, now kill this guy/these guys! Okey dokey, NOW you can hit the big bad for damage! Rinse and repeat!" Let's not forget our favorite mechanic, the "let's kill this thing within a certain amount of time or else EVERYONE dies." One of the worst goddamn mechanics you can find in a video game, especially for one that has a KNOWN BUG that destroys your heavy ammo (re: the stuff that does good goddamn damage). tl:dr The raids in Destiny are awful and I agree with most of what OP says.

Sounds like you had a very normal raid. I have over 100 raid clears under my belt (somewhere in that neighborhood) but when we first hit Crota on hard it took a combined 9 hours to put him down. Just because you stopped at Atheon doesn't mean it was a failed raid. Until you've got it down pact it's going to take a few different runs or a couple of hours to beat certain sections. Also with so many people with no mics you didn't have much chance. Edit-no one is going to blame you for goofing up the jumping puzzle or maze, but if it istaking you forever you can always leave and come back after getting the chests.

Raid are actually "absolution" cb if you work well together, like we did, they're funny, interest ont, and challenging (for a 3 ppl group vs crota we tryharded , but it was really good to finally have him down, and be proud of deserve our black hammer)... I agree with not watch ont videos before, but find you a buddy that will carry you amont the raid (i can so cropta alone till deathsinger, ONLY cause i dont have ghally) and witch is fine with it, i'm not complairont about hem ping friends, béa cause it's always a pleasure... And if he rions, i'll be nice and just exp l'aon him how to so it better... Today i tried cropta hard, and did many fails by my own(2 or 3 in a row ruined the game xD ) and my mates helped me with it... I was happy they did... We failed it unfortunatly buy i would be glad to try again the challenge... And i lernt a interest inv thing about crota cp i didn't know even by finishing him few times

                    • If you are willing to ever do this again in the future or for future reference, be sure to watch YouTube videos of a specific raid being done by others; I wouldn't dare join a raid without having an idea on what to do. I personally have no use for doing a raid other than to get acendent shards and acendent energies faster in order to fully upgrade my armor in order to benefit from Intellect, Strength, and Discipline; so that I am more at an advantage in the Crucible. Other than that, the only use I have for a raid is to get the raid gear, not so I can be level 32 and go through a raid better and I already have what is needed to be level 32 anyways; it is because I like the raid gear, how it looks etc. Raids aren't for everyone, but it seems like there are more that like raids than those who don't. I'm a lone wolf, so raids don't work well for me; especially since I don't care for a mic. I find the best experience in Destiny are the Strikes, the Strikes that have matchmaking; this is just my personal opinion, although I have lately been in Strike where either only two of us are there from the start or one just stands there the entire time and it is only two of us or someone comes late and there are only two of us. I like reviving and helping other people in Strikes, I like how Strikes are not too long, but not too short either; I like how I feel I can actually complete a Strike and do well unlike raids.

                    • Oh man don't even worry about it. It's a game and you play it how you like. I personally never mic up or join rando raids because people tend to annoy me and not be very cooperative or kind. The clan I'm in is a small one of some of the most skilled and laid back people I've ever played with so if you were on 360 you would totally be welcome. If you are with a cool group or with people you know it can be a ton of fun. When you are with a lame group it is really an unpleasant experience. Maybe its not your thing but I'd keep your mind open because you might find a cool group. My clan was trying to run VoG on normal to get the flawless raider achievement a while back and we made it all the way to the jumping puzzle before someone died. We all started laughing because it would be the area with no enemies that ruins our run :) just an example that not everyone is so horrible to play with.

                    • Raiding is to tedious. Find 5 others. Then you find 2 and wait 1/2 an hour to get more people for the game to start. Then u start and it's a 2 hour thing. I've completed it 3 times I think all shards and a hover craft thingy we ride. I got more drops from strikes than anything. Not knocking it if you are in the mood but it's more of a headache than joy. Just my opinion. ....

                    • I share these exact sentiments... I thought I was the only one! Did VoG on easy twice, beat it once, never hard. Ran Crota maybe 3-4 times, never beat. Meanwhile I'm like the only person in my fireteam not dying, even though I have no idea how to do the raids, which equals crazy amounts of frusteration and kills the joy of the game for me. Since I only have so many hours a night to play, I just rather spend it on stuff I find enjoyable or something mind numbing like Patrols. I run 3 characters, with my main being a 32 hunter (once I hit Crota rank 4, gear is set, just need mats converted) and two 31's on their way to 32. 32 because I run the first part/s of the raid solo. Anyway, to each their own, just glad to know I'm not the only player out here not running the raid 6 times a week haha
