I hope the changes they announced will bring back players. Nothing will make up for the lack of new content, but folks if you haven’t played recently the power progression feels much better and rewarding.
And with the 300 starter kit they are gonna give away and the absence of reset in Renegade it feels much more meaningful to grab good loot to prepare for a galaxy far far away…
Also, Warlock currently make Ultimate difficulty look like cakewalk.

Yeah, Bungie has made a lot of improvements to the game of recently, especially the leveling speed, and the new changes to the Portal next week should smooth out some of the difficulty spikes for more casual players - problem is that there aren't enough people in-game to notice the changes. Bungie needs to advertise this stuff better; word of mouth universally sucks right now.

Nothing I've read or seen has persuaded me to return. The franchise feels like it has run it's course and is now winding down.

Yeah it probably never will be as big as before hence the reduce content delivery. But the core gameplay is still fun, at least for me.

If renegades is poorly received, that will more than likely be the end for Destiny.

Kinda nailed it here but accidentally - we need a roadmap of the next few yesrs because right now there's no investment. It's grind for power in old content, to get better loot, to use in the same old content, & it's all meaningless bcoz of the delta caps & modifiers. I grinded to 530 then wiped my acc & started a new one, got to 250 then did the blops 7 beta & coming back to the portal, solo ops, crucible, it's just horrible. Not increasing levelling won't bring anyone back bcoz the playloop is very dull & boring - BUT if we had a future some people would come back - bcoz right now there's more chance of bungie being closed than a destiny big dlc.
