Tips on dog attacks

There is almost never not a dog attack on my runs anymore. I always run into dogs. I was attacked by two dogs tonight on my run. I had my headlamp on, and as I was running I saw two pairs of eyes Glowing from the light. And I knew this wasn’t gonna turn out good. Scared one of them back into the wide open fence of the yard belonging to the person watching this happen. I told this person to put there dog in the fence. Finally after seeing it “safe” to continue running, I resume. After running into a dog I always keep my headphones off for at least a couple minutes in case it follows me. It’s happened. Not to my surprise one of these dogs, a Rottweiler, charges me (Rottweilers are no joke. Never turn your back on a stray Rottweiler.) what am I supposed to do??? I charge the dog myself. The dog gets scared off and the owner, an 11 year old starts cussing at me like he’s a big deal. I told him “I never want to see your dog near me again.”
I always keep a small pocket knife on me on my runs. I’ve never had to use it gladly, but I’ve pulled it from my pocket. It’s for precaution. Dogs where I live are usually pit bull, or Rottweiler.
So this potty mouth preschooler says “or what, your going to touch him?” I said “yes!” He finally closes the gate and I keep running. But on my way back the dogs start threatening me again. I was already done with this by now. I looked closer at this dog and realized it’s the same dog who almost attacked my mom while she was cleaning a house in the same street. This made me extremely angry. My mom has back problems, and this is a big dog. If I was not there it would have probably killed her. After trying to scare the dogs off he then decides to bring the dog into the house. After that I told him that i have surveillance of this dog threatening my mother. After a bunch of yelling I walked away. His parents never bothered to come out. I’m done with dogs. Absolutely DONE

  • If you live in a state where concealed carry or open carry is legal, just make it clear to the owner. The second the dog attacks you. You're going to ventilate the animal.

    • I work in a plumbing/heating place. The means we get a lot of service calls, usually when the home owner is at work. You always hear the same thing; “Oh, don’t worry about the dog/dogs. They won’t bite.” Yeah, ok so maybe your dog doesn’t bite when you are home. But if you aren’t there, your dog is going to act differently. Now, most of the time the dogs are fine. But I have been in a few close calls, some even when the owner was home. On the other hand though, some owners will say that they’ll lock up the dog for the day. Those are the good owners that know that their dog acts differently when they aren’t home.

    • I don't run around dogs because it might kick in their predatory instincts. If dogs do approach you, it's not always because they're going to attack. If you keep your cool or even act friendly, they typically lose interest eventually.

      • If they try to attack you try to get them on their back. It's a method called "wolfing", throw them on their back and get in their face, hold their mouth shut with your hand and let out a guttural roar or something along those lines. Or just try to pin them to the ground and again get close to their face (obviously hold the head down and have a hand around the muzzle so you don't get bit) and yell at them. Gotta show them you're stronger, dominance and all that.

“There are no bad dogs. Only bad owners.” —-Cesar Milan Your problem is with the humans. Not the dog. You are dealing with irresponsible humans who have an allowed a dog that requires strong leadership (large, territorial, guard dog instincts) to become a problem. When dogs are like children. If you don’t lead them well, or set limits for them? They start acting out. They think, “-blam!-…if no one is leading then I guess I’ll have to.” So they act according to dog instincts with a toddler’s understanding of how the world works. So that Rottweiler thinks it’s protecting its territory (and family) from intruders. It’s the responsibility of the humans to rein that aggressive behavior… and you are clearly not dealing with people who are willing to do that. Talk to local authorities and see what your options are. Most residential areas have laws regarding minimum standards for dog ownership. If you go that route, get ready for war…because your conflict with the humans is going to go to a whole new level if you bring the authorities into this. It’s liable to get really personal and really nasty. So make sure this is not a fight you simply wish to win, but is one you can’t afford to lose. …and if the dog is truly menacing people who can’t protect themselves and the owners refuse to deal with it responsibly? It may be one you have to have to protect others. There are—sadly—-some people who just have no business owning a dog. They don’t have what’s needed to care for it properly. Because it is a relationship that take a lot of time and energy.

          • Not sure which country or state you live in but in certain states of the United States you have a right to protect yourself and others from life threatening harm by using deadly force. In other words; if a dog is attacking you or someone else and you feel that your’s or their life is in danger you can shoot it dead. You might have to go to court for it but all you have to do is prove that the killing of the dog was necessary to prevent the loss of human life. So my advice would be to carry something like a knife, something long you can hit it with and if you can a gun. In today’s world you might run into a dangerous person you have to use it on.

We’ve got some crazy neighbors that have 3 giant pit bulls. Now, they’ve never really been a threat, but they always sound like they’re killing each other. Not to mention they aren’t really trained and could easily jump the fence they’re behind. It’s scary sometimes. Sorry to hear that though. I hope you weren’t harmed

          • I'll be honest- I like most dogs, but I've only ever loved a few. If your dog charges me, snarling or tries to bite me, it's getting my steel toed sciatica ridden kick to the skull, and if that doesn't give it the message or it gets a hold of me, your dog is going to die- and You will be paying for my medical bills in the very near future. No excuses for raising an animal poorly. That Dog will be dead and you will have no one to blame but your shitty care. That which you have tamed is your responsibility, forever.
Sorry to Dog owners, I like Dogs, but I was attacked when I was a kid by a big dog, could have ended worse; tragically even, But there were people around luckily. I have had reservations and resentment to dogs for a long time, only in my early adult years did I finally start to feel more at ease around good dogs. But I still get angry thinking about what happened when I was a kid and how it changed how I act.
I'm fairly confident I can take a dog. They suck at wrestling. Or you could do what my sociopath of a brother did... Storytime. My sister used to take our brother's dog out for runs and was attacked by two dogs that apparently frequently got out (irresponsible pet owners are grating af) so my brother took it upon himself to wait in his car until he saw the dog that did most of the attacking going out for a stroll and made it his last...

When I was young, we lived in the country and my sister and I rode our bikes for miles, just to have something to do. There were a few homes along the way, but only 1 had an extremely aggressive dog that would chase us barking very angrily every time. We normally outran it, but one day it got ahold of my foot, put a hole in the top of my shoe and foot, and I ended up getting having to get a tetanus shot if I recall correctly. The dog's owners were literal trailer trash (it was a mobile home), and they were just complete and total asses to everyone. Knowing talking to them would do no good (the wife even prompted the dog from her screen door a couple times). So my Mom bought us a new thing that was supposed to deter attackers (people). It was the first releases of pepper spray to the public. I carried it all our rides after, to where the dog did get close enough again, that I was able to it right in the face with the spray. At first I thought I had killed it, because it somersaulted out of control, but it then got up yipping all the way back to it's home. It never chased us again. The old bat in the trailer would yell at us, but she was too fat to chase us.... My point - Get yourself a can of pepper spray. You can get small enough containers with a strap around your wrist, that it will always be at the ready while you run, without having to fumble around for it. If a dog ever does get close enough to you in a position to attack, one hit in the face should be enough to teach it that you're off limits.
