Classic engineer doesn't understand any other discipline. Never fails

Classic "other discipline" that assumes an engineer doesn't understand anything. Never fails.
-
I am a statistician, and this guys reductive, cynical view of statistics is ignorant and low IQ
-
Except he didn't actually question "statistics". He didn't make a claim regarding the numbers. He assessed the logic that Bungie stated THEY use in making some of their decisions. He is cynical of the decisions being made, as are a lot of people, not the numbers. The irony in your statement is that you started by claiming "engineers" only know their own discipline, yet you have demonstrated that your assessment is based on YOUR understanding of what you do. Additionally, there was no need to insult the OP. He did not make any definitive statement other than "statistics can be manipulated", which is not debatable. He did not say that they WERE, or lay claim to any set of data. He presented examples of what COULD be manipulated in support of his OPINION on the matter.
-
Hence reductive and cynical. Looks like we've got another engineer, this time w low reading comprehension and a high concentration of philistine BS
-
Nothing in his assessment is "reductive". He did not take actual stats and make any analysis of the actual numbers. Why? Because the actual numbers are not available AND in the case of his criticism completely irrelevant. BUNGIE set the standard of analysis. Not the OP. They didn't say "only X percentage of players are using Y". The said that engagement with X does not warrant the money/time investment. Which has nothing to do with the OP's point of saying, another POSSIBILITY is that the quality of the items being produced is less than that of what Bungie considers profitable. The numbers that would be necessary to make your point valid, simply don't exist. Was the gear in question ever available in both places? No. Was the gear in question ever available at the same cost? No. So there isn't anything other than what was stated by Bungie to assess. So the OP couldn't actually be reductive in relation to the available data. It was already presented as such by Bungie. The players have told bungie, WHY they don't use certain gear. They don't like it. They think the quality of the gear in the store is higher than what players can earn. So calling them out on this has nothing to do with whatever data Bungie used to make this decision. I get that you think you are clever, but you aren't actually making a good case for your comments.
-
I'm not here to make a case. You, however, continue to make me out as saying something I have not said.
-
I just didn't see the need/point in you insulting the OP.
-
So reply and prove it wrong. As a layperson, his logic appears sound. I would.love to hear from a statistician.

Editado por TheYesAndTheYall: 8/6/2023 2:10:28 PMUnfortunately I am in the same boat as him and I have zero access to the relevant data. Consider his claim that "the stats can be fudged to say anything" equivalent to me saying "we can make this interstate with any mix of concrete and water, it'll hold." It doesn't take an engineer to suss out how an interstate with improper materials may not be sound, or, more likely than not will be unsound. I would say the same of anyone gesturing toward statistics without robust data and statistical intuition

Except the failure of the blacktop will be apparent to non-construction workers. The failure is clear, even though you may need an expert to figure out why there was a failure, and to remedy the issue upon rebuilding. Statistics, on the other hand, require an expert just to let lay people know that the results cannot be trusted. Because most don't know how to be critical of statistical analysis it is ripe for abuse by bad actors. apples and oranges. statistics are commonly used to deceive or misdirect. poorly built highways not so much.

This feels like it's framed like a retort but I think we are on the same side?
-
oh yea, I'm just being pedantic. the metaphor doesn't work is all. not a lot of work right now, and it's too hot to touch grass 🤷♀️
-
Hey... telling people to revise their metaphors is my other job! Back off 😭
-
Fairs. Thanks for a polite reply. Have a great day

-
Congrats, but he is making a point that Bungie doesn't do anything, and frustrated he has devoted his time to a game that has been abandoned.
-
no one is arguing that bungie does nothing. get on yr meds .
-
You have a serious problem with reality and mindset.
-
No, I am not full of myself like some "statistician" who has an inflated ego.

Editado por TheYesAndTheYall: 8/6/2023 6:53:13 AMI dunno how two new element types with new subclasses, full free revamp of all light classes, 15 vanguard ops, seasons with two matchmade activites when we were lucky to get one a season in Forsaken, exotic missions three seasons in a row, longer bigger campaigns longer bigger dungeons with bigger exclusive lootpools dropping 2x a year instead of maybe every other year... means that they do nothing. So yes. You have a reality and mindset problem. Even if you do not like these things, they are objectively Some Thing. And this has nothing to do w statistics or your easily bruised self esteem
