Time really flies

I’ve been doing a lot of reflection recently because my whole life has died and rebooted yet again. This seems to be a common feature of life. When I was a child I felt like time crawled, as a tween it walked and in my adolescence it jogged. Now it just feel like it’s slipping down a hill. Time just keeps sliding into the future.

  • To expand on what someone else said, a lot of the reason life seems longer when you’re younger is because your brain pays attention to life a lot more since more of the experiences are new ones, so it feels like you’re doing more in a given amount of time (say, a week). When you’re older and life starts becoming more monotonous, your brain pays less attention to those monotonous things, so if you spend your week doing only monotonous things then it will feel like less happens in that week. Your brain doesn’t need to pay attention to your commute to work, or your work, or your evenings watching TV, so by the end of the week a lot has happened but your brain didn’t pay attention to any of it, so it feels like the week flew by.

    • Life is like a pallet of freight that fell into the ocean, it has its ups and downs, and your just drifting along for the ride. Eventually you'll end up like a piece of driftwood (old+salty), you'll wash up someplace different than before, and then ask yourself how the hell did I get here?...

It's all perception and you can control it. I noticed that in the period before exams, it felt like I'd enter bullet time. 2 weeks might as well be 2 months- there was something about the pressure and anxiety that caused this. It doesn't necessarily need to be pressure and anxiety, but avoiding repetition in your life will slow your perception down. I personally despise routines, because they do just this and I feel like they are stealing my relative life left. If you're interested, the rate at which you experience your life is, as you can guess, proportional to how long you have already lived. So, when you are young, another year is a much more significant portion of your life compared to now. It follows a 1/x curve, and you can see how much of your relative time you have experienced and how much you have left by performing an integral over the curve up between some limit close to 0 and your current age. If you take this away from an integral up until your average life expectancy- you'll have how much the relative time you have left to experience in proportion to how long you have already lived . If you're in your mid 20s you have about 15% left, assuming you live to the average lifespan. I really wasn't happy with this, which is why I've started doing the above.

        • Someone responded to a post I made stating that it's an actual scientific fact that our perception of time passing increases with age. I haven't looked it up, but it sure seems plausible.

          •
Time just keeps sliding into the future.
*Slipping
Tempus Fugit actually means "time flees". The translation kept the original meaning, but in other instances, such as with Carpe Diem having its translation butchered from the original ("pluck the day"), the meaning has been completely lost. A lot like having childhood memories and experiences changed from positive to negative and vice versa in retrospect if you think about it.
• You got to stop thinking about the sh*t you haven’t done. Focus on what you have achieved, what you’d like to try and what you’d like to do again. Make sure you don’t go a day without doing something. Even if it’s as simple as going out for a walk or riding your bike. It’ll keep you from dwelling on the past. Life’s too short to worry about the sh*t you didn’t do.
