How does SBMM work?

Not necessarily jumping on to say matchmaking is broken but I am curious how it works. I understand Iron Banner is SBMM but what algorithm is used to determine skill? At one point I went 8 kills and like .7 KDA to 21 kills 3.0 KDA in a span of like three matches. Confused and maybe I could get a better grasp if I understood. Also if you’re in a fire team which player is used to determine the skill level? My regular playing partner is better than I am so maybe that’s it. Anyway I’ve poured through these forums and some of you really seem to know your stuff. Help me understand please and thank you.

  • IB is CBMM not SBMM. The only mode that has SBMM is survival & elimination. There is, according to many on this forum, SBMM in the shape of lobby balancing, but I have yet to experience any sign that either this is working to balance the teams or actually exists. What you also need to consider is that IB is probably poorly populated atm as there is no need to suffer to get 4 pinnacles if you have been playing since the start of the season so you are more likely to match either the sweaty tryhards or newbies that picked up the 30th anniversary pack but not much in between.

    • Every player has a hidden MMR based on their skill, as far as I know. This hidden rating is used to determine how the game will balance the lobbies. The SBMM in this game tends to handicap you by putting you with weaker players against a more stacked team.

Its really hard to say how it works. But what it does, at least when I play is it basically takes two teams and calculates the skill ratings of each team based on the people on the team. Then the fun starts. Because after that whatever rating or stats you have basically dictate what you're outcome will be and what you will be capable of most of the time and the game prints out a match hopefully to enough of the people in the lobby's liking. Which is generally decided based on numbers on the carnage report screen and not how the game felt to play or what it looked like for some odd reason.
