My Trials experience last night

This is not a post about matchmaking, the Meta, cheating, lag, game design, forced participation, etc. No. This is about the experience of playing Trials last night, mine and my team mates'. What happened and how we felt about it. No complaints, no suggestions, just telling it as it was. If you don't care, don't read it. Like many others, we went in this weekend hoping to get the coveted majestic leg armor glow. We are all PvE mains, with some of us enjoying some PvP on the side, some not minding it in small doses (quests etc.,) and some outright despising it. I already had my seven wins for the MMXX title so I knew what to expect. The others had been putting it off until they got Magnificent so they wouldn't have to do it twice. Smart men. I'll spare you the gory details of a team of sub-1200 ELO players facing off Unbrokens and Flawless in Trials. After a few games, we would just tap out to orbit and give them the free win as soon as we saw them rocking those titles or flawless glows. No point wasting anyone's time, the least we could do was deny them the satisfaction of stomping us silly. Occasionally, we would face a team that we felt we could win against. Occasionally, we won. We even got to three wins on a card once. The first game the poor sobs on the other side tapped out after one round. I don't want to think what their Trials experience must have been if they found us intimidating. The other two games were also down to pure luck, including one guy MT'ing himself in the face. One other guy's super ended just in front of me, my punch whiffed and I threw a smoke bomb instead, and he died to the smoke. It was rather hilarious, and we were all literally hysterical after being on the verge of, if not past the point of, nervous breakdown all evening. Mind you, between the three of us, we were rocking 5 mental or neurological conditions, 6 different prescription drugs, some non-prescribed (but legal,) and of course coffee. There were rage quits. There were sounds of things smashing against other things. There were things shouted that I wouldn't want, or be allowed, to quote here. Now, for the fun part. We got killed from outside line of sight. I was killed by a MT by a guy who was on the lower floor, who then jumped up to my ghost after having killed me. I got sniped around corners more times than I can count. I got splattered by a shoulder charge that whiffed past me and hit the air, only to register with my face half a second later. I domed a guy with my Revoker who didn't take any damage despite the yellow tooltip. Almost every single game, the Launch button wouldn't activate and we would have to wait for a minute before it finally would. The poor guy who just wanted to get these done and be gone forever had to suffer that much longer due to a well known bug. Seriously, Bungie? One game, we were leading 4-1, then all of a sudden my mouse stopped working. Just like that. I unplugged it from my monitor and plugged it into my PC, to no avail. I plugged in a controller, nothing. I alt-tabbed and it worked just fine in Windows, just not Destiny. I went to the in-game menus and the cursor there was moving just fine, even if clicks weren't registering. Mind you, this is all while my team mates are playing a 2v3. By the time I had restarted the game, they had already lost 4-5. The game literally takes longer to start than my PC does from a cold boot, including the BIOS check, RAID initialization, Windows, and all the startup programs (Skype, Teams, Viber, Steam, Epic, Uplay, Spotify, SteelSeries Engine, Adobe, OneNote, Realtek HD, Samsung Magician, iCue, Aura, RTX Voice, GeForce Experience, probably others without icons.) It is ridiculous, but not as utterly and completely idiotic as what I can only imagine was the input processing thread die undetected. In over 30 years of gaming I had never seen anything so poorly implemented. And then there were the tokens. Between the seven wins we eventually got, the two sets of dailies and ten repeatables, I had maybe 40 Trials tokens, maybe more. Only, I didn't. On the off chance that I was too mentally drained to see them myself, I shared my screen with the guys and we went through my inventory, postmaster, and vault. Zip, nada, zilch. I then turned to the Internet and sure enough - a forum post points to a help article which isn't linked or referenced anywhere else. Sure enough, way down towards the bottom of the article, in a section named something else, there's a mention that Trials tokens don't go to the Postmaster. Like, really? REALLY, BUNGIE? Everything else in this game goes to the postmaster. Everything! Every weapon, armor piece, consumable, shader, emblem, vehicle, you name it. Only Trials tokens don't. Don't you think, perhaps, that it might be a good idea to have that little fact mentioned in-game if it's so unbelievably difficult to actually fix it in code? Am I really expected to run a very specific Google search to find a post that links to an otherwise unlinked article that casually mentions that ALL MY TOKENS WILL BE GONE? All my blood, sweat, and tears gone to waste? Seriously? SERIOUSLY? This was the last straw. I feel betrayed, disgusted, and drained. I can no longer view Bungie with any amount of trust, sympathy, or frankly any emotion beyond contempt or indifference. I have lost the last bit of hope that they are capable of understanding what's good for the game, let alone deliver it. When the time comes to make a choice between Beyond Light or Cyberpunk, I know where my money will go. And it's like I can't afford both, either. But enough is enough. Bungie have just a few months to restore my lost faith. I doubt they will. And I doubt they care.

Pretty sure Bungie made the Trials requirement because before and after the most recent Trials updates, the population varied around 150K players, with some outliers, compared to the over 350K players on release. Nobody even bothered to try it again, which means Bungie has no data to say if those changes were effective at all in keeping people in Trials. We know they weren't good enough to invite people in. Now the population is at 230K, and will likely be consistently as high in thr mme following weeks. They'll likely compare that to next week's poulation and the weeks after Solstice to see if the changes were actually effective at getting people to stay in. But, it won't. Now loosing punishes people even more and there still aren't Trials drops at the end of matches or adept gear. Population is going to drop right on off to the ground again.

            • I gave up on ever playing trials. I’m trash at pvp, and I refuse to drag others down and prevent them from getting flawless just because of me. I won’t play, because I know the playlist is better off without me. I gotten so much hate from comp just on Xbox. Don’t need to give many more people a reason to want me gone.

              • I have never felt more frustrated playing this game. I can understand the need to include pvp requirements in event objectives. I enjoy some light crucible play, although I’m not very good. But the 7 win trials requirement is just ridiculous and frustrating for people like me who are not geared for and not skilled in pvp.

              • There are so many things wrong with this game, you'd think that it's made and maintained by like three people; nope, last I checked, they had around 200 people. Destiny has become that game in the bargain-bin that you look over and think long and hard about, only to put back and walk away lol. It's always been bad in one way or the other but things have gotten exponentially worse since Activision got rid of them, I wonder if the things we liked were made by Activision's studios.

                • Right as I was reading someone posting cheats were impossible on console we lost to a team with a god-mode Titan that killed us while standing in a Witherhoard blight and tanking 3+ hits from both an arc staff and a sentinel shield. His other teammates weren’t hard to kill, but this guy just said ‘nope’ to damage every other round... to make things look legit perhaps? Not that it matters now. We were a pug with no mic, yet managed 5 wins in a row. But that just made us quit. Trials is what it always was. Pure poison.

                    • Man that's a rough experience. Thanks for sharing and I genuinely hope someone at Bungie reads it. I'd honestly like to get some insight as to what goes on at Bungie and where these decisions come from or what their real motivation is for driving people into activities they would not normally entertain. Season after season we are seeing more and more issues with Destiny and I get it, the game is too big. But nothing compares to the rampancy of cheaters and the toxicity of high level PvP and yet in the one seasonal event where we are supposed to celebrate us as Guardians, we are being directed to complete an objective in an activity most will not touch out of choice and tbh most will bang their head off the wall in frustration when they realise they can't even manage a win. I genuinely feel that the heavy monetisation of the game Inc creating content for Eververse, promoting triumph lead junk for the rewards store and supporting a community of streamers that make a living off of content and carries is more important to them than the player experience and I think that might end up being their downfall.

                    • Good post and read. I would just like to add my experience here as well. Having a full time job and a family I can only get on to play in the evenings normally, this means it has taken me until Sunday to complete my armour on all three characters - and even then only because of some very late nights (sorry Mrs!). I finally joined in the Trials late on then and oh boy what a mess. Nearly every match there was someone we suspected of cheating because of hits not registering; constant flick-shot snipes even when sliding, peeking or on invis targets across the map; and latency issues with a death followed after by the player running in and shotgunning. After a good 20-30 matches I have 1 win and not enough tokens for an engram. I am not a bad PVP player, I generally average K/D about 1.5 in crucible but in trials I was lucky to get 0.5. After I get my 7 wins I will not touch trials again by choice, I don't mind a hardcore mode for the hardcore players but don't lock 5% of a PVE grind behind the mode designed for the 1% of players. The only sensible answer seems to be to put trials, and maybe comp too, behind the season pass paywall. I mean my son enjoys the game but doesn't have season pass so cannot access a lot of content he would enjoy but every time he comes across a quest requiring entering PVP he stops playing for another few weeks - which is why I won't buy him the season pass. Yet ironically, the 'top' content in PVP is completely free to access which makes it a breeding ground for cheaters.

                    • Git Gud, Scrub! Oh sorry, I'm used to all the hate from PvPers on here whenever I post something. I hope Bungie reads this, but I fear, sadly, they won't. I have a whole video of lag-switchers on console. I play PvP on console to try to get away from the cheaters, but it's not working. There is more and more fishy business going on. I'm not sure what hacks they can use on console, but I KNOW there's something you can do to cheat. I've seen a lot of stuff firsthand that isn't normal gameplay.

Its different to see a post soley about the experience without just saying its bad. It really puts perspective on the actual feelings of the player. Hope things end up alright for you my guy.

                      • There is a reason why no one wants to play Trials. So much so that now we see Bungie's latest lame attempt to increase participation by making it a requirement for Solstice armor. Well, it won't work. Nobody is going to play that trash no matter what. Trial will go extinct, and it'll never be too soon. LOL. Don't waste your time with the Solstice grind. My advice is: only upgrade the blue armor so that you can buy the glow from Eververse (with dust). That's it. Once you get the ornament, you'll be able to apply it to any next season's piece of armor. The present Solstice set has trash stats anyway. Why bother?

                            • This is a great post, and it's one I hope Bungie reads. Sadly though, I don't think it will have any effect on their decision making. I never did care about the white glow. When so much of my PvE time is spent in Orpheus Rigs, why would I? If I went through all the trouble of Masterworking that set, then any time I throw on an exotic, it's going to screw up the aesthetics of my gear anyway. It was worth a Valor reset last year, because I'd 1, already done that, and 2, had one ready to go just because. I really do feel bad for anyone who isn't able to resist the urge to slog through that garbage for it though. Bungie is preying on you to feed you to streamers. It's dirty and it's low as hell.
