Trials needs Better Incentives to combat Dwindling Player Base

Okay, to everyone who says, "Trials is for the Best of the Best," I'm with you. It should be, but listen up. Trials is set up as a tournament where your early wins should be a little easier, and your latter matches are tough as nails as you're increasingly playing against those vying for those 7 wins, or even a flawless ticket. Think NCAA March Madness or... nearly any tournament structure you can think of. Ideally, casual players will get 1-2 wins and get better. Amateurs will probably got 3-5 wins. Semi-pros will get 5-7 wins, and Pros will go flawless. That's cool. Everyone is happy. Currently, however, Casuals are getting 0 wins or maybe 1. Amateurs are getting 1-2 and then being stomped repeatedly (that's my team). Pros and Semi-Pros are getting 7 wins once a week (maybe), and then token farming at the 1 win mark over and over. That's unhealthy. Imagine if the Championship hopefuls just reset their progress in a normal tournament, over and over, to blow out the most hapless teams. That makes for bad entertainment and bad feelings. That's the current state of trials. Already, Casual players are giving up on trials. Some may say, "that's fine, I'm not a casual player, and this is meant for the best." The problem with that, is Amateur players no longer have anyone they can beat to get to 3 wins, unless they get lucky with matchmaking and end up playing each other to 3 matches. More likely, they get their first win or two against other Amateurs and get crushed by token farmers for the next 4 matches (yeah, I'm in that boat). Eventually, Amateurs like me give up on Trials. Then you're down to Semi-Pros and Pros going sweaty from the very first match. Eventually, the cycle repeats, and you're left with just the Pros. In other words, we have a steadily decreasing player base. So how to fix this? First, there needs to be an incentive to go in and at least complete a ticket. Go ahead Casuals, get stomped. You'll feel bad, but the incentive for adding to the player base is worth it. Maybe it's a powerful drop, maybe it's a pinnacle, but there has to be more than absolutely zero. Next, there should be significant drawbacks to resetting your ticket. Maybe it costs 25k glimmer every reset, maybe something else, but either way, token farming casual players should be disincentivized. Personally, I want to play Trials. I do well in Comp, and I'm ready to up my game. However, I'm tired of getting easy wins the first match or two of the ticket and then getting face-stomped by top 2.5% players for the next 4 matches. Considering PVP (Trials) is a big focus this season, Destiny would do well to reduce the epic crushing that's happening to most of the player base who want to try the new thing. Finally, to those who say, "It's Trials. Get good." or "Casuals don't belong in Trials." It's not about that. It's about maintaining the player base. Pros deserve their 7 wins and Flawless tickets. Casuals don't. But Casuals should feel like Trials is more than an utter waste of their time and morale.

  • Dude, you're right, ok? You're right. But listen, and I'm going to let you in on a secret here, just listen up. Imagine how much this games means to you, how much the PVP aspect is a cool hobby, how much you like the competition. OK. It's pretty big deal, right? Guess what, Bungie does not care. At. All. None. So, as much as I sympathize with you, I just want you to know you are being completely and entirely ignored, Bungie does not care and will never care until the entire management structure is drastically reorganized..which is never likely to happen. They don't care what you think, and they also don't even care about the game itself. All the best

      • I’d say they need to address the hacker situation first but I don’t really care. I hated trials in D1 and I hate it here in D2. Those who wanted it and begged for it. You got what y’all deserved. I’d feel sorry for you lot if it wasn’t for the fact that given the state of the game in Season of Undying. This sad rendition of Trials was all but certain if it came back. Enjoy you got what you wanted. And all the true curses that come with it.

        • Exactly. They need to allow people to get some rewards before 3 wins. Currently you can’t get anything or turn in tokens before you get 3 wins. Casual aren’t able to reach this mark each week, making trials a waste of their time. They could introduce weapon and armor bounties back from D1 to incentivize people playing despite losing, and possibly add random trials drops at the end of each match. Then to keep a flawless incentive, add adept weapons back, and possibly some armor ornaments.

The Passage of Wealth needs to give bonus tokens for each win on the ticket, and going flawless needs to give 60 tokens. 1 win gives 5 tokens. 2 wins gives 10. Etc. Passage should also increase the tokens acquired from bounties, from 2 to 5. Boom. Token farming win 1 ends.

          • This is one of the reasons why I won't look for a Trials team. I know I'm an average player and I'm Ok with that. But going in and getting completely decimated for no reason? I don't want a participation trophy but it would be nice to have something to show for it. Give me a non-pinnacle reward or something. Hell an ornament would suffice!

          • No, they need to focus resources on a new campaign that will draw everyone in. The dwindling playerbase is a result of trials not originally appealing to the majority of people.

          • Flawless players need to be put in their own player pool. If a single player on a team has been flawless, that team should only play against other teams who've been flawless. I'm yet to see a single good argument against this.

            • I don’t know maybe all those casual players as a top tier player would say maybe we should all just take a break from playing Destiny and see how much it drops they don’t want to fix nothing they want to make everything unfair so what happens if we all just leave no more casual players maybe they would get the hint to start fixing things trials is no fun because you just go against flawless people would make more sense to go against people your skill base is still going to be challenging but at least somebody would actually go flawless every once in a while I think Bungee is taking us all for granted all us casual players Let’s see how many top tier players are there after all the casual players leave I bet you they won’t be very many

              • Hot take: trials is trash and was never good. All it ever did was promote cheating, toxicity in the community, paid carries etc, and sandbox changes that ultimately -blam!-ed the game. This game should not rely this heavily on pvp.

                • The only thing I think they should change is adding a longevity goal to get to the lighthouse. Like every 50 or 100 wins or so will get you a trip to explore the lighthouse but they can’t open the chest. Saint-14 could say something different and give you a small drop. Winning has to stay important and they should always be against good teams.

Add all the loot incentives you want, it won't save that toxic brewer of a mode when it shifts the game as a whole

                • Or once a team goes flawless those players get put into a different matchmaking bracket. Wishful thinking, I know, but it would alleviate a lot of issues.

Pretty much. There's no reason to stay anymore. No loot. I'd almost say reverse the token rates, 3 on loss 1 on win, then 7 wins rewards 50 and flawless gives another 100. So the best do get their reward and the bad get it too. And then the milestones will give a "curated rolll" and engrams canngive anything from the pool that week

                  • Exclusive loot for flawless. Exclusive armour for flawless with ornaments. Adept weapons with the new last resort perk as an intrinsic perk. Game is already beyond broken, a mediocre perk being intrinsic won’t change it and the perks could be done the way they were done in rise of irons trials where both versions of the guns are identical aside from base colour but with the new perk on the adept. Trials of the nines ornaments are gorgeous so why can’t we see new ones? Or what about flawless armour that lets you use something like chroma on it? Games had all the endgame exclusive shit basically removed for casuals so they can get the same loot. Makes most of the content meaningless

                  • Trials was never gonna be a success because they did nothing to make it a success it's literally the bungie theme right now since Activision left this sinking boat, they are copying an pasting old d1 content you already paid for an charging you again for it in D2 if something doesn't change by next season or look like changing this game will be in an even worse state that d2 year 1 cause you will have burnt players twice by then I doubt there will be a third chance.

                    • If you want increased player participation then get Bungie to add optional matchmaking. This would have the additional benefit of providing a wider range of player ability allowing an increased chance of matched against similar skill and match wins.

                      • Trials should never have been brought back until Bungle got Regional Dedicated Host Servers. Calling anything competitive when it's based on 2000ish Halo Era Peer to Peer Networking model is an absolute joke.

                      • Remove the loot lockout and let people turn in tokens for any of the drops available from Trials regardless of wins or what is available that week. Loot at 3, 5, and 7 wins should be non-masterworked curated rolls that change weekly (and by that I mean both the loot and the rolls. For example, a shotgun as a reward in week 2 will have a different curated roll than a shotgun in week 6.) Flawless chest should reward an Adept weapon (Celerity as an intrinsic) and masterworked Flawless armour piece, both at pinnacle power levels. The amount of tokens you earn per match should scale from the start to the end of the card. (1 for the first game, 7 for the last.) Increase the amount of tokens from the weekly bounties from 5 to 10 or 15. Players who have been flawless for the current weekend are placed into their own player pool. (This is still an abusable system but better than the nothing we have now.) That's my 2 cents anyway.
