Sun’s gravitational pull and The Almighty?

With a structure the size of The Almighty and it’s proximity to the sun how is cutting the engines and “free falling” it towards the Last City even possible?

  • We disabled the connection from the Almighty to Sun in the campaign. It was the primary function for the Almighty and it was disabled. Zavala and Ana board the Almighty because there is Suspicious activity on it. The Cabal that were aboard sent it in a collision course with Earth and then as seen they disabled the engines so that the course couldn’t be corrected.

  • Then there's the Reef. How material with almost no gravitational pull can somehow keep us glued down, hold an atmosphere, and support life with earth-like summery temps... It's a child's game written with a snail IQ that children dont actually play propogating un-science into the minds of millions of millennials. The easy to pick up Halo gunplay is literally the only reason this game is successful.

What I want to know is what about the sun? In the mission fury Asher Mir states that, ahem:
The Almighty is inextricably bound to the harmonic resonance of the sun's magnetic flux tubes.
Which means that if the almighty was destroyed then the sun would go with it which would make sense for the almighty, the entire point of it is to guarantee that a species will surrender and if they don't the cabal would link it to the stars magnetic flux tubes and guarantee the destruction of the star, one way or another. This is why we had to disable the weapon rather than blow up the almighty... That being said we do know little about the almighty and so my theory is most likely flawed... I really hope we get some lore on the almighty Edit: another thing I'm worried about is the people trapped on the almighty, look at the 'no rez for the weary' Ghost story for more information...

That defys the laws of physics and I'm not knowledgeable about physics per say. If the ship was close to the earth, well okay. But if the ship were closer to the sun, no. The gravitational force from the sun would pull the ship into the sun not to the earth.

Destiny is set at the very least 700+ years into the future. The sun’s gravitational force is weakening every single year as the days go by. In 700 years? Something as small as the Almighty in comparison to the Sun shouldn’t even be floating so close to the Sun. It should just be free floating to us anyway Edit: Joke answer to a joke question. Y’all are so serious here. It’s a game. That’s your answer.

        • Escape velocity. You just need to accelerate it to a speed where it can escape the Sun’s gravity. Then set it on a course so it crosses Earths orbit at the right time of day. NASA does it all the time. And we disabled The Almighty’s weapon, not it’s engines. Any species that can manage interstellar travel could pull it off pretty easily.

Finally, some fun times to explain space-related stuff! First things first: Oberth effect. There is no way to effectively slingshot a sun or star-sized planet that we know of yet. Far too much gravitational pull. What one might consider doing, to great efficiency, is the Oberth effect. Basically, a spacecraft enters a gravity well (in this case the sun) and, utilizing precise thruster burns of increasing velocity, accelerates into the well thereby increasing speed and building up kinetic pressure for a massive engine burst. Once late stages are built up, gravity assist from nearby planets and other objects create a pathway for a ship to reasonably escape from a gravitational area like the sun. You simply overcharge the engines with enough mechanical pressure (kinetic pressure) to pull away on a single axis. This is obviously highly dangerous. Too much pressure and you cause any number of problems. Too little, you won't escape and fall right back. Given the Almighty has a lot of stored-up heat cells too? I would say it is most likely a combination of joule energy (heat energy) and kinetic pressure. It would have little to no issue pulling away from the sun. The bigger question is why would they drop it rather than repair it, blast the sun, and walk away... something is tricky about that.

            • I mean if it’s close to the earth it will be pulled by the earths gravity for the same reason we have a moon and it isn’t just pulled away into the sun

Better yet, that ship is in space. Just run into it to move it, like they did to that Star Destroyer in Rogue 1. Its by the sun, something like what, a 5 degree turn over a couple days would move it off course.

Other examples are spacecraft using continually burning engines, or worse, banking craft while in motion in space. TLDR: don’t take Bungie Space Mechanics seriously...

                • Uh, easy fix, use the ships thrusters to escape its gravity, then cut them as it hurtles to earth.

Because we needed to save the whales. Pretty simple. Captain Kirk and a small crew hijacked the ship and tried to use a slingshot motion around the sun to travel back in time. This ends badly so they transported off the Cabal ship and stole a Klingon ship. Spock didn't have a chance to see where the ship was heading before they left it.

                  • Use Mercury for a gravity assisted slingshot out to earth's orbit. It's probably physically possible if a few unknowns are cleared up, but short of some hyper-space magic, it's going to take a good long while for it to get to its target, giving us plenty of time to nudge it off course. Which begs the question, if there is some hyperspace jump drive shenanigans. Why cut the engines until it's too late? This seems like another Holdo maneuver debacle.

                  • Psion Flayers yanking it out of orbit. I’m assuming that the Almighty is in Solar Orbit as it doesn’t appear to have any active thrusters throughout its existence. That means that the psions only need enough force to dislodge it at the right time and with the right amount of force. The Flayers were able to rip Phobos (similar sized object) from its orbit as well as suspend it for a significant amount of time over Mars. The amount of force required is dependent on the size of the two objects, but only needs to be enough to get it started as the force of gravity from the sun at this point would continue to decrease. Basically: Space Magic that is not out of the realm of possibility given what they’ve already done. Psions are OP...
