Destiny 2 from a BETA D1 player

Destiny 2 is MILES better than 1 could have EVER been. 7 raids, multiple PvE activities, an experimental (some consider failure) hybrid PvP/PvE event, constant feedback (even if it's not what we want to hear sometimes), weapon balancing (though that COULD be quicker), more events, locales, better story... I dont even think I NEED to go on, but D2 is in a MUCH better place than it was and the community is quick to start a witchhunt because the Devs wanted to be HUMAN and spend time with their families over the holidays. I used to think the Pokemon fanbase was the most crooked and toxic, but nah, that belongs to this "fanbase" of echo chambering "knowitbests". Now, D2 isn't without flaws (Eververse being the most damning), but to say D1 is better is putting on delusional rose colored glasses.

1600 hours into D1, during the first year I had some health issues going on so I played A LOT. 400 some in D2. So I think I'm pretty qualified to make a comparison of the two games... D1 did 3 things better IMO and one of them people probably hated. 1. Actually having to level up weapons and farm the mats to upgrade them. It was more of an RPG type of experience doing that. Was the Relic Iron farm on Mars tedious? Yes. But there was a social aspect to it. 2. Strike specific loot. The Grasp of Malok. The Flayer Mantles. 3. VoG. Still the best raid in the history of the franchise that dropped the best gun in the history of the franchise. Vex Mythoclast. D2 does strikes better. Missions better - we're not just guarding Dinklebot from waves of enemies anymore. Horde mode activities. Menagerie > PoE The director. The actual story. The lore being accessible in game. Public events actually being marked on the map. Not having to run 3 missions in the same exact spot, although D1 did run the areas in reverse sometimes LOL. More vendors. More enemy types. No Siva. Better enemy AI, enemies seem to actually use cover by choice not accident. Not as stale of a meta in crucible, you're not running into people who slide shotgun all game long like you did in D1. And most importantly Valus T'aurc is gone because I don't want to step into a war on Mars to take out their commanders ever again. There's more examples I can list but that should cover it. Two disappointing aspects of D2...Trials being shelved and Faction Rallies being shelved. But D1 even shelved an event, Queens Wrath. Which people hated that event anyway but it had one of the best Snipers in the game at that point. The Supremacy if memory serves me right. I went through my vault today and purposely leveled up The Number and The Garden Spire to 960 to take them for a spin in crucible. I'm sure getting killed by one of them confused some people.

    • I honestly don't know if you're being genuine, or just baiting people: The Destiny community has the biggest hard on for D1 it's honestly mind boggling. They'll just make abstract statements about how it was, "more rewarding" I guess running Sundial once and getting 4 weapons of my choice (and 1 random armour piece) just isn't rewarding enough? Raids are too mechanic heavy now, but King's Fall wasn't? I guess punching Ghalran's deception in unison is too complex? Going where the map reader tells you to go is too confusing? Forming a conga line is too- actually I haven't done GoS so I can't speak on that, lmao. Plus, Shattered Throne and Pit of Heresy are dope af! I hope they get their own loot pools in the future.

Bungie has been at this for 5+ years now and we have: No new vendor refreshes Eververse being the only things that gets a refresh Elemental affinity Season pass only good source for high stat armor Chore lists Nothing feeling rewarding The same enemies (except the scorn?) More content but most with no reason to ever play Factions gone Lackluster exotics And last but not least, people comparing it to 2 years ago and saying it’s in a better spot 😆 D1 was 2 years ago! D2 SHOULD be in a WAY better spot, but truth is it’s not. Sure D1 now only has 4 raids, but they are all fun and relevant cause they rotate challenges each week and give you awesome ornaments for completing. Ornaments you don’t have to buy from eververse! I know that sounds absurd, but I assure you it’s 100% true! They also have a key system for farming the strike playlist that rewards strike specific loot for play and only when you want to use your keys! Did you know roaming supers isn’t an issue in D1? It’s not! And grenades can actually kill other guardians! Not just HH nova! Oh, and in D1 to this day... idk if I can say, it might excite some people a little too much... oh hell I’ll say it: YOU CAN CUSTOMIZE YOUR SUBCLASS!!! Crazy, I know. You can pick which ability you want to run with what melee like exploding knife OR juggler with chains of woe! Keyhole and combustion for golden gun! It’s insane! I sure hope they improve on that system at some point and don’t just give us a bunch of better stuff we never asked for instead like the ability to see public events on the map while taking 10 steps back with other stuff like customization, rewards, and for the love of god I hope they keep cool ornaments and gear in the game and never lock all that stuff behind a ridiculously overpriced paywall in the eververse... oh wait 🤦🏼‍♂️

More doesn't mean better. I like the idea and style of Gambit (prime>normal personally), a hybrid activity is hard to balance,, that is logical. Better story? You mean the surprise butthole eating uldren instead of a 1vs1 fight a guardian with light and dark powers? Or all the cliffhanger still having cliffhangers in a SEQUAL? I personally felt like I was a guardian in D1 and tried to save the universe, in D2 I feel like an errand boy. Kill x enemy because x person said so in a edgy way.

        • I do bemievw that D2 is a better overall game than D1. One issue that I take with D2 is the overal atmosphere of the game and its ambience. The world of D1 truly felt post apocalyptic. You were delving into the ruins of humanity while also exploring alien environments. While the scebery in D2 is certainly amazing and breathtaking, it doesn't convery the feeling of loss that the first game did. Dreaming City, Tangled Shore, Nessus, Edz are all large and nice to look at. They have great aesthetics but I will always have a fondness for the Sunless Cell, Wrath of the Machine areas, and the final areas of the cosmodrome facility where you fight Omnigul. They just drip with aspects of dark world building.

        • Haha!!!!......No. D1 is miles better then D2 could ever dream of. D2 is a game where Bungie is trying to reinvent the wheel rather then stick with the formula that made D1 as amazing as it was and what made it work. Not to mention with D1, you didn’t have Time Gates and FOMO. And the Raid rewards were far better in D1 then in D2 cause of Weapons like Vision of Confluence, Fatebringer, etc. in D1, cause the Weapons were Elemental Primaries and it motivated me to do the raids so I could get an Elemental Primary so I could have an element in each slot for when match game was the perk for the Nightfalls. In D2, the Raid Weapons to me are not worth it.

          • Remember that augmented weapons don't even compare to the amount of choice perks we had in D1 on a single weapon.

          • I disagree. In D1, the focus was on doing activities and getting gear once you reached max light level. In D2, the focus is the grind for a minimal (and meaningless) increase in light levels then doing this all over again when the season resets every 3 to 4 months. D2 has become an Excel spreadsheet game.

D2 Quantity < D1 quality Overall as a whole d1 is better and d2 is a mess rn. Sure d2 made many improvements, it has more quantity of content. Year 2 was pretty good overall. But overall as a whole game d1 was better. At least in D1 pvp wasnt a consistent mess and eververse wasnt rampant like it is now. D1 costs alot less than d2 as well.

                • True
except for vendors, I like how you could actually buy specific weapons with different perks each week

maybe bungo should combine that with the system we have now? You can spend tokens on a weapon with a specific roll, OR you can get a completely random roll like we currently do
• Most of the D1 glory comments I see from players are silly. When you read through their argument most had only started playing around age of triumph. They missed the content droughts, the failure that was prison of elders, the annoyance that was collecting planetary materials and the constant lob-sided idiocy that was crucible. People seem to forget felwinters lie, final round snipers, one hit fusion grenades and titans throwing lightning grenades like they were flowing out of their ass. I could continue further but I’m going to leave it at the grass isn’t greener on the other side. I played both games and enjoyed and got frustrated with both. I’m hoping D2 finds its path but there is no guarantee.

Ok... I respect this opinion. I see where you’re coming from. I’d like to offer a different opinion, just to even things out... 7 raids - technically yes, D2 has more raids, but a few of them are Lairs and by no means does the quantity equal quality. While there are some good raids in D2, D1 raids on average had a much better combination of gunplay and mechanics. D2 raids are waaaay too mechanic heavy. multiple PvE activities - Ok. D1 also had these. Clarify? an experimental (some consider failure) hybrid PvP/PvE event - I won’t say anything about Gambit, I hate it so much. You can have this one. constant feedback - from the community managers? From the game director who inherited a game the direction of which he didn’t particularly agree with and decided it needed to be more grind heavy? I guess we get more feedback but does it really mean anything? weapon balancing - it’s about on par with the same mess that we had in D1. If you’re talking about PvP, it still suffers from the core issue of still being tied to PvE. events - for better or worse D2 has more events. That doesn’t mean they’re all winners, but yes. We have events. locales - D1 also had “locales”. Not sure what this means. Is it filler? better story - Oh boy, here we go: Nope. Biiiig nope. D1 had the promise of an amazing universe that we were reborn into, with the chance to fight the ultimate evil and with expansions that added epic narrative and gameplay. D2... ugh. Cheesy, cliched writing, TERRIBLE expansions up until Forsaken which was STILL a narrative mess which ultimately DIDN’T matter but everyone gave it a pass because the previous expansions were garbage and it added more “stuff”. D2 doesn’t know where it is because the narrative team doesn’t know where it’s going. D1 may have had some narrative stumbles but D2’s story fell off a goddamn cliff. And just to sum up... No one wants the devs heads on a stick for being “human”. No one wants them to kill them selves over this game. What they DO want is a team that uses the resources they have to develop content that is engaging and fresh and new, and a game that isn’t just the same repetitive grinding regurgitated over and over every year. And while we’re at it, calling people names and putting them into a group you can snarkily dismiss doesn’t exactly help your case. It just shows you aren’t willing to accept that there are more opinions than yours. But hey, if the mindless grind of D2 is your thing, then great. I’m happy for you. The rest of us simply might want a little more than this.

                        • I like the concept of the season pass and the knowing that we'll have content throughout the year. This is something I feel is better from d2. I still prefer the set up, skill tree and the way Iron Banner and Factions were done in d1. I wish d2 had more raids and less lairs. I wish d1 had a lair or 2 so people could load into a raid and knock it out in an hour. I miss blade dancer and self res warlock.
